Texas-San Antonio (4-8) At (13) Oklahoma State (12-1)
GAME NOTES: The 13th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys are coming off a highly- emotional win, and they hope to make Texas-San Antonio the next victim. UTSA enters this game having lost two straight games to fall to 4-8 overall, and the club owns an 0-5 mark in true road games. On Wednesday, the Roadrunners traveled to TCU and were sent away with a 63-51 loss. Oklahoma State won its first 11 games of the season before finally falling to Tennessee by two points. The Cowboys faced national powerhouse Pittsburgh in their next game, and the result of that clash was a thrilling 95-89 overtime victory. They have now been idle for nine days and hope to improve on their 7-0 home record. Oklahoma State has won all three of its previous meetings with UTSA by a wide margin.
UTSA has failed to reach the 70-point plateau at the offensive end through 12 games, and the club is averaging only 55.8 ppg on 39.9 percent shooting from the floor. The Roadrunners are permitting just 62.6 ppg to their opponents, but the horrendous offensive play has overshadowed the strong defense. Melvin Smith leads UTSA in scoring with 12.8 ppg, and Isaiah Allen is the only other double-digit scorer with 11.3 ppg. In the 12-point loss to TCU earlier this week, UTSA shot 1-of-8 from three-point range and 10-of-20 from the foul line, two obvious contributing factors in the setback. It also didn't help that the club suffered a 49-27 rebounding disadvantage, including 19-6 on the offensive glass. Allen scored 13 points in defeat, and Smith finished with 12 points.
Make no mistake, one of the premier players in college basketball will put on an Oklahoma State jersey in today's game. Mario Boggan has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week in three of the last four weeks, and he is averaging 21.7 ppg on 61.7 percent shooting from the floor. He is also pulling down 7.2 rpg and appears to be a solid early candidate for National Player of the Year accolades. Boggan does not have to carry the load alone for the Cowboys, as JamesOn Curry is posting 17.5 ppg in addition to his 4.6 apg. Terrel Harris (11.2 ppg) adds further balance to the lineup. In the thrilling triumph over Pittsburgh last time out, Boggan poured in a career-high 30 points to go along with nine rebounds. Curry tallied 20 points for Oklahoma State, which earned a 47-35 rebounding advantage and a 32-23 edge in points from the foul line.
Oklahoma State is playing with a wealth of confidence, and a blowout victory tonight will do nothing to negatively affect the club's momentum.
