Longhorns Cruise With Second-Half Run

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

(Sports Network) - D.J. Augustin scored 19 points to help No. 16 Texas defeat Texas-San Antonio, 58-37.

Justin Mason added 12 points and five rebounds while A.J. Abrams tallied 11 points in the win for the Longhorns (1-0), who finished last season 25-10 and have won their season-opener for the eighth time in the last 10 chances.

Devin Gibson had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Travis Gabbidon added nine points for the Roadrunners (1-1), who opened their season with a win over Hardin-Simmons.

The Longhorns scored their fewest points in a season opener since 1945 but held the Roadrunners to 18 points in the second half and 26.7 percent shooting for the game.

Texas had a tough first half as the team shot just 7-for-22 from the floor during the opening 20 minutes.

A jumper from Augustin at the buzzer gave the Longhorns a 22-19 lead heading into the second half.

Holding a 28-25 lead about six minutes into the second half, Texas took control of the game with a 13-0 run, including five straight points from Mason, three straight free throws from Augustin and a three-point play from Alexis Wangmene.

"Their game plan was designed to keep the game close and they did a good job of executing the plan," Abrams said. "When we went to the locker room, we decided that we needed to play harder and kind of get them out of their comfort zone which I think we did well."

Gabbidon's three-pointer stopped the bleeding with 8:35 to play, but Texas- San Antonio didn't make a basket for the next five minutes and consecutive three-pointers from Abrams put the game away.

Game Notes

Texas is still waiting for top recruit Gary Johnson to be cleared to play because of an unspecified heart condition. Johnson played in one of the Longhorns' exhibition games but has not been cleared by team doctors for the regular season...Abrams set a Big 12 record last year with 120 three- pointers...Texas has won all six matchups against Texas-San Antonio.
