No Love In LA; Bruins Freshman Headed To NBA

POSTED: 6:34 pm EDT April 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - Less than two weeks after losing to national runner-up Memphis in the Final Four, head coach Ben Howland and the UCLA Bruins learned they could be losing three-fifths of their starting lineup to the NBA.

All-American center Kevin Love announced Thursday that he will enter his name into the 2008 NBA Draft, holding a press conference at the university that also served as a forum for guard Russell Westbrook and forward Luc-Richard Mbah a Moute to announce their future.

UCLA went 35-4 this past season -- 16-2 in the Pac-10 -- and reached its third consecutive Final Four under Howland before falling to Memphis, 78-63, in a national semifinal.

All three players emphasized that they will not sign with agents, allowing them to retain their respective college eligibilities provided they withdraw their names from the draft by the NBA's June 16 deadline. Junior point guard Darren Collison, who was reportedly set to announce his decision to leave last week along with Love, did not announce his plans.

Love, a 6-foot-10 freshman from Lake Oswego, Ore., was named Pac-10 co-Player of the Year along with another first-year player, USC guard O.J. Mayo. Mayo, a likely top five pick, announced he would forego his final three years at Southern Cal last week, and Love is himself projected as a first-round pick.

In his only college season, Love averaged 17.5 points and 10.6 rebounds for the Bruins, joining Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts, Kansas State's Mike Beasley, North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough and Texas' D.J. Augustin on the All-American first team.

Collison was second on the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game, while also handing out 3.8 assists per contest and coming up with 61 steals. The 6-foot-1 junior, a product of Etiwanda (CA) High School, missed six games during the 2007-08 season, but was a member of three consecutive Final Four teams at UCLA and is also projected as first-round draft pick.

Westbrook's decision comes as a mild surprise, but the sophomore guard's stock rose dramatically over the course of the season and during the Bruins' NCAA Tournament run.

A supremely athletic 6-foot-3, 187-pounder from Hawthorne, Calif., Westbrook raised his scoring average from 3.4 points per game as a freshman to 12.7 per contest this past season. He also averaged a team-high 4.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game, totaled a team-best 63 steals, and proved his capabilities as a ballhandler by taking over the point guard duties when Collison missed early-season action with a knee injury.

Mbah a Moute was a member of all three Bruins Final Four squads, and averaged 8.8 points and six rebounds as a junior this past season. A native of Cameroon, the 6-foot-8, 230-pounder attended Montverde (FL) Academy before arriving in Westwood having played just four years of organized basketball. He went on to start 106 of a possible 113 games in three years with the Bruins.
