Arkansas Rolls Past Vandy Into SEC Semis

POSTED: 6:34 pm EDT March 14, 2008

(Sports Network) - Darian Townes and Gary Ervin each scored 18 points, and propelled Arkansas to an 81-75 win over 18th-ranked Vanderbilt, in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.

Charles Thomas added 13 points for Arkansas (21-10), which also beat Vanderbilt on March 1 at home. The Razorbacks' win moves them into a semifinal matchup on Saturday with fourth-ranked Tennessee, which edged South Carolina in the quarterfinals Friday.

"We've got to get ready for Tennessee in a short period of time," Townes said. "We've got to get our scouting report, (figure out) how to guard them, and get ready to play tomorrow."

Stefan Welsh and Patrick Beverley contributed 11 points apiece for Arkansas, which out-rebounded Vanderbilt 45-24.

"We gave them way too many second opportunities, and third opportunities and fourth opportunities," Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings said. "That was the difference in the game. They just pounded us on the boards."

Alex Gordon hit on 5-of-10 three-pointers en route to 22 points for the Commodores (26-7), who have lost three of their last five games. A.J. Ogilvy had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Shan Foster -- the conference's leading scorer and player of the year this season, went for 14 points.

A close game throughout, Arkansas held just a three-point edge with minutes left, though turned the ball over on a five-second violation with 1:50 left, giving Vanderbilt a chance to tie.

But Ross Neltner's drive to the hoop was blocked, and Arkansas came down with the rebound. Neltner also fouled out on the play going for the board, which sent Beverley to the line.

Beverley made both for a 69-64 Razorbacks edge with 1:35 left. Gordon attempted to bring the Commodores right back, but his three-pointer was off the mark and went out of bounds.

On the ensuing Razorbacks possession, Thomas collected an offensive rebound for a put-back, and gave Arkansas a 71-64 lead with 1:07 left.

Vanderbilt made some shots down the stretch, but the Razorbacks made 10-of-12 free throws to seal the game.

Arkansas held a slight edge early in the contest, and just short of the midway point of the first half, a Townes dunk put the Razorbacks up 21-15.

The teams traded baskets for the rest of the period, as Arkansas couldn't pull away, and Vanderbilt couldn't pull even. Only a layup from Ervin gave the Razorbacks a 40-36 edge at the break.

The second half brought much of the same, though the Commodores tied the game at 48-48, when Foster canned a jumper less than five minutes in. Arkansas scored the next three points, and again held the slight advantage until Vanderbilt again tied the game.

This time a three-pointer from Gordon knotted the contest at 58-58 with 9:22 left. But Ervin countered with consecutive baskets -- a layup and three- pointer -- to restore the Razorbacks' five-point edge.

Vanderbilt got within a bucket once more, when an Ogilvy free throw trimmed Arkansas' lead to 67-64 with 2:20 left.

Game Notes

Jermaine Beal had 12 points for Vanderbilt...The Commodores were 8-of-21 from three-point range, while the Razorbacks made just 4-of-15 from beyond the arc...Arkansas had 50 points in the paint, compared to 20 for Vanderbilt.
