NCAA Game Summary - Washington At Washington State

Sunday, March 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Kyle Weaver led the way with 20 points as 23rd- ranked Washington State outlasted Washington, 76-73, in double overtime at Friel Court.

Taylor Rochestie added 16 points for the Cougars (23-7, 11-7 Pac-10), who have won seven consecutive games over their in-state rivals. Robbie Cowgill had 10 points and eight boards for the victors.

Jon Brockman scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Huskies (16-15, 7-11). Ryan Appleby poured in 16, including four three-pointers, and Quincy Pondexter picked up 12 points before fouling out with under a minute left in regulation.

In the second OT, Washington State forged ahead 76-70 thanks to a Cowgill jumper and Aron Baynes and Rochestie combining to make three-of-four from the line.

Appleby hit a trey with 42 seconds to play, which brought Washington within three, then forced up a long three as the seconds ticked away, but missed by a good margin and the Cougars escaped with the win.

The game remained close to start, with Washington State unable to pull away by more than four in the early going. The Huskies rebounded to assume a 22-18 lead on a rainbow three by Appleby with 5:27 left in the half.

Washington's lead grew to as much as six points on an Artem Wallace lay-in before a 10-0 run by the Cougars to end the period put them up 30-26 at the break.

After falling behind by six early in the second half, the Huskies rebounded at a 9-3 clip for a one-point edge with 14:40 remaining on a dunk by Tim Morris.

Later, the Cougars moved ahead 48-42 after a Weaver jumper, but the Huskies struck back with a 10-3 push for a 52-51 lead with 4:08 to play after Pondexter sank a pair from the line.

Pondexter's slam with 1:51 to go boosted Washington to a 58-54 edge, but two free throws by Weaver and a make by Cowgill sent the game into overtime.

In the first extra session, Justin Dentmon hit a deuce with 1:24 left which gave Washington a 66-64 cushion. Trailing 67-65, Rochestie missed a potential game-deciding three in the final seconds but Cowgill nailed the putback with four seconds left to forge a 67-67 deadlock.

Game Notes:

Derrick Low added 16 points for Washington State...Despite the loss, Washington leads the all-time series, 167-98...The Huskies owned the glass, 47-29...Weaver also posted six assists for the Cougars.
