NCAA Game Summary - Valparaiso Vs. Wright State

Friday, March 7, 2008

(Sports Network) - The sixth-seeded Valparaiso Crusaders upset defending conference champion and third seed Wright State, 72-67 in the second round of the Horizon League Tournament, as Shawn Huff drained five three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points.

Bench contributors Brandon McPherson and Jarryd Loyd were vital in Valparaiso's (21-12) upset bid, adding 16 and 14 points, respectively, while hitting all 12 of their free throw attempts. Urule Igbavboa was solid in the post in tallying 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Raiders' (21-10) Scottie Wilson and Jordan Pleiman each tallied 15 points, with Wilson pulling down eight caroms and Pleiman logging a game-high nine boards. Todd Brown also recorded a terrific all-around effort with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Vaughn Duggins also got involved with 13 points in a losing cause.

Valpo's five three-pointers in the first half offset the Raiders' 55.2 percent shooting from the field, as WSU held a miniscule 38-37 edge at intermission.

Wright State went cold in the final period, hitting just 11-of-28 from the field, while the Crusaders sunk 46.2 percent from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line to secure the five-point victory.

Valpo's bench clearly outplayed its counterpart, as the Crusaders' subs outscored Wright State's bench, 32-9 in the upset victory. Valparaiso must now knock off second-seeded Cleveland State in the semifinals to have a chance at stealing an NCAA Tournament bid.
