NCAA Game Summary - NC State At South Carolina

Friday, August 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Mike Davis ran for 101 yards and a touchdown to lead the South Carolina Gamecocks to a 34-0 victory over the NC State Wolfpack in non-conference play.

Chris Smelley tossed two fourth-quarter touchdown passes for South Carolina (1-0).

Andre Brown ran for 101 yards in the loss for NC State (0-1).

The game was scoreless until there were just 20 seconds remaining in the first half, when South Carolina kicker Ryan Succop nailed a 29-yard field goal to put the Gamecocks up 3-0 at intermission.

Late in the second quarter, NC State freshman quarterback Russell Wilson took a knee to the head and had to be taken from the field on a stretcher. He did have movement in his limbs, and early reports stated that Wilson suffered a concussion.

The Wolfpack had 20 passing yards in the first half and 49 for the game.

With 12:12 remaining in the third quarter, Davis plunged into the end zone from one yard out on a fourth and goal play to extend South Carolina's lead to 10-0. The score was then pushed to 13-0 with just over one minute left in the third frame on a 46-yard field goal by Succop.

Like NC State, South Carolina lost its starting quarterback due to injury, as Tommy Beecher left with a possible concussion in the fourth quarter. Beecher, who threw four interceptions, was replaced by Smelley, who promptly threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dion LeCorn to make the score 20-0 in favor of the Gamecocks.

With 6:53 left on the game clock, South Carolina pushed the advantage to 27-0 on a three-yard touchdown rumble by Taylor Rank.

Smelley continued to make the most of his opportunity, as he tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jared Cook with 3:32 remaining, making the score 34-0.

Four turnovers and a 4-of-14 effort on third down conversion attempts led to defeat for NC State.
