NCAA Game Summary - Kent State At Iowa State

Saturday, September 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jason Scales scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to help lead the Iowa State Cyclones to a 48-28 win over the Kent State Golden Flashes in non-conference play at Jack Trice Stadium.

Scales carried the ball 19 times for the Cyclones (2-0) but gained a mere 31 yards on the day. Quarterback Austen Arnaud, who also scored once on the ground, hit 12-of-15 passing for 166 yards through the air.

The Golden Flashes (0-2) were paced by Julian Edelman who threw for three touchdowns and 171 yards. Eugene Jarvis gained a game-high 139 yards rushing and also made it into the end zone for Kent State in the setback.

Jarvis was responsible for the first points of the contest when he raced into the end zone from 23 yards out less than four minutes into the first quarter, providing the visitors with a 7-0 advantage.

From there ISU scored 21 unanswered points, beginning with a one-yard TD run by Scales. A 24-yard touchdown pass from Phillip Bates to R.J. Sumrall was followed by a three-yard TD run by J.J. Bass barely a minute later to give the Cyclones a 21-7 edge at the end of the first period.

A 29-yard touchdown pass from Edelman to Jarvis to begin the second frame cut the deficit to just seven points.

However, Arnaud responded in the next series for the Cyclones with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Sumrall to make the score 28-14.

With just over a minute remaining in the first half, Kent State picked up another touchdown when Edelman found J. Simpson with an 11-yard strike, leaving the hosts with a 28-21 lead at the break.

In the third quarter Iowa State put up 10 points, thanks to a 30-yard field goal by Grant Mahoney and a five-yard touchdown run by Arnaud.

Trailing by a score of 38-21 in the fourth quarter, the Golden Flashes had one last gasp with a 36-yard TD pass from Edelman to Shawn Bayes. But from there ISU again posted 10 points, three from a 48-yard field goal by Mahoney and another seven courtesy of a four-yard TD run by Scales to provide the home team with the comfortable 20-point victory.

The 48-point effort by the Cyclones means the team has scored at least 40 points in back-to-back games to start a season for the first time since 1976.
