NCAA Game Summary - Troy At Florida Atlantic
Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Fort Lauderdale, FL -- (Sports Network) - Troy quarterback Jamie Hampton ran for a pair of touchdowns before leaving with what appeared to be a devastating knee injury in the Trojans' 30-17 win over Florida Atlantic. Hampton was injured in the final minute of the third quarter on a run up the middle. His knee buckled under a host of defenders. and the sophomore had to be helped off the field. The early diagnosis is likely a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, meaning Hampton will probably miss the rest of the season. He's scheduled to be examined again Wednesday. Going into the game, Hampton had completed 63.4 percent of his throws for the season with nine touchdowns against seven interceptions. He left Tuesday's contest after completing 10-of-21 passes for 116 yards with an interception, while rushing 16 times for 61 yards. Sophomore Tanner Jones took over at QB after Hampton's departure with the Trojans already ahead, 27-10. DuJuan Harris ran for 60 yards and a TD for Troy (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt), which snapped a two-game skid and will play at North Texas next Tuesday. Rusty Smith connected on 21-of-41 passes for 283 yards with a TD and a pair of interceptions for FAU (1-5, 0-2), which has lost four in a row and was coming off a tough last-second loss at Middle Tennessee a week ago. Smith also had a rushing score. Warley Leroy kicked a 34-yard field goal early in the opening quarter for FAU, but Hampton scored on a two-yard run later in the first. It became 10-3 when Sam Glusman booted a 20-yard field goal just 63 seconds into the second quarter. The Owls botched the return of the ensuing kickoff, with the ball bouncing off the helmet of tight end Rob Housler. Harris then scored on a 16-yard run. Smith found Jamari Grant from eight yards away for a score to bring FAU within 17-10 at the half. Glusman made a 35-yard field goal try early in the third, and another mistake cost the Owls as a high snap went over the punter's head, giving Troy great field position inside the five. Two plays later, Hampton scored on a one-yard plunge for a 27-10 difference. Glusman kicked a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth before Smith scored on a one-yard run for the Owls, whose next game is at Western Kentucky on Oct. 18.
