PHILADELPHIA -- The Oklahoma Sooners garnered the
top spot in the Bowl Championship Series standings for the second straight
week, while Miami remained second.
The Sooners (8-0) stayed unbeaten on the season after a 34-20 victory over
Colorado on Saturday. Oklahoma, which will take on Oklahoma State next week,
has a total of 2.45 points.
The Hurricanes (7-0) took the second position with 3.87 points. Miami
was idle last week and begins preparation for its toughest test of
the season, a visit to Virginia Tech on Nov. 1.
Florida State (7-1) advanced two spots to third in the BCS with 10.34 points.
The Seminoles posted a 48-24 win over Wake Forest and, in the process, gave
coach Bobby Bowden his 339th career victory, the most in Division I-A history.
Virginia Tech had been third in the standings, but fell 13 positions after
absorbing its first loss of the season, a 28-7 setback to West Virginia on
Wednesday.
Southern California (7-1) jumped from seventh to fourth with 11.07 points,
while Georgia (7-1) fell one spot to fifth with 11.15 points. The Trojans are
coming off a 42-23 victory Saturday at Washington and will take on
Washington State next week. The Bulldogs hung on for a 16-13 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday and face SEC rival Florida in Jacksonville this week.
Rounding out the top 10 were Ohio State, LSU, Washington State, Nebraska and
Michigan State. Iowa was 11th, trailed by TCU, Michigan, Oklahoma State and
Tennessee.
The BCS formula is derived from subjective polls of the writers and coaches,
seven computer rankings, schedule strength, losses and a bonus-point system
for quality wins.
The two teams that have the lowest point totals in the final BCS standings on
Dec. 7 will battle for the national championship in the Sugar Bowl on
Jan. 4.
Champions of six conferences -- the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10,
and SEC will qualify for a BCS game. Two at-large teams will also be selected
to fill out the field. Clubs outside those conferences automatically qualify
for a BCS contest with nine wins and a top six finish in the final standings.
