Former Michigan QB Mallett Transfers To Arkansas

POSTED: 10:42 am EST January 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - Quarterback Ryan Mallett, who spent his freshman year at Michigan, has officially transferred to the University of Arkansas.

The 6-foot-7, 252-pound freshman from Texarkana, Texas had checked into a dorm room at the school Monday morning, but was not officially enrolled at Arkansas until Wednesday. After sitting out the 2008 season, Mallett will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Mallett appeared in 11 games as a true freshman for the Wolverines, filling in at times for injured starter Chad Henne. He completed 61-of-141 passes for 892 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

Mallett decided to transfer after Michigan hired Rich Rodriguez to replace the retiring Lloyd Carr as head coach. Rodriguez's spread option system, helmed at West Virginia last season by dual-threat QB Pat White, is designed for more mobile quarterbacks.

At Arkansas, Mallett will play in new head coach Bobby Petrino's pro-style offense. The Razorbacks return senior starting QB Casey Dick in 2008.
