Saturday, December 1, 2007
Baltimore, MD -- (Sports Network) - Reggie Campbell returned a kickoff for a touchdown and ran for a score to lead the Navy Midshipmen to a 38-3 victory over the Army Black Knights in the 108th edition of the classic rivalry between the two service academies. Zerbin Singleton added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown on only five attempts for Navy (8-4), which captured the Commander-in-Chief Trophy for the fifth straight year. The Midshipmen have won six straight over Army, the longest streak in the history of the series for either team. Tony Dace ran for 104 yards on 28 attempts in defeat for Army (3-9), which suffered six consecutive losses to close out the campaign. The only points of the first quarter came with 46 seconds remaining, as Singleton scored on a 38-yard run to give Navy a 7-0 lead. Midway through the second quarter, Army scored its only points of the contest on a 28-yard field goal by Owen Tolson. On the ensuing kickoff, Campbell caught the ball at the two-yard line and raced 98 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Navy advantage to 14-3. The kickoff return was the longest in program history. Navy scored 10 more points before halftime, as a one-yard touchdown run by Shun White and a 51-yard field goal by Joey Bullen pushed the lead to 24-3 at intermission. Bullen's kick was set up by an outstanding return by Campbell. After a scoreless third quarter, Campbell gave Navy a 31-3 advantage with a 12-yard touchdown run. The final points of the clash came on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Jarod Bryant, one of 10 Midshipmen to register at least one rushing attempt. Navy finished the game with 294 total yards, 287 of which came on the ground. Defensively, the Midshipmen limited the Black Knights to 217 total yards. A program record of 479 points have been scored by Navy this season, as the team broke the previous mark of 442 set in 1917. Army was just 1-of-12 on third down conversion attempts and lost a pair of fumbles, two major reasons that the team finished with its lowest point total against Navy since 1991. The Midshipmen, who are headed to the Poinsettia Bowl, have outscored the Black Knights by 169 points during the six-game series winning streak.
