Morriss Won't Return To Baylor For 2008

Sunday, November 18, 2007

(Sports Network) - Baylor head football coach Guy Morriss will not return to coach next season, the school's athletic department announced Sunday.

Director of athletics Ian McCaw said he informed Morriss on Sunday, and that Baylor is making a "change in the leadership of our football team." Morriss' departure ends a five-year tenure in which he led the Bears to an 18-40 record.

In 2007, Baylor went 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the Big 12. Two seasons prior, Morriss had his best year with the Bears, leading them to a 5-6 record, and two conference wins for the first time in school history, including the Bears' first conference road win.

"I believe the football program is in better condition now than when I inherited it," Morriss said.

Baylor hasn't had a winning season since 1995 when the Bears went 7-4. Since joining the Big 12 in 1996, the Bears have won more than three games only twice: in the 2005 and 2006 campaigns, both under Morriss.

McCaw said the search for Baylor's next football coach would begin immediately, with the help of a search consultant, though no timetable was set.

"A national search will begin immediately to identify and recruit the very best person to lead Baylor football into the future," McCaw said.
