GAME NOTES: The Wyoming Cowboys will take on their second Mid-American Conference opponent of the season when they host the Bowling Green Falcons this Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. The Falcons opened their season with a sensational, 27-17 victory over Pittsburgh. However, since then the team has struggled, losing two consecutive games, including a 20-7 setback to Boise State two weeks ago. BGSU is just 1-4-1 all-time against schools currently in the Mountain West Conference and that lone victory came way back during the 1975 season against BYU. After this game the Falcons will finally begin league action when they host Eastern Michigan. As for the Cowboys, they are coming off an embarrassing, 44-0 setback to BYU this past weekend. The loss dropped Wyoming to 2-2 on the year, and 0-2 in league play. The Cowboys do not have much experience against the Mid-American Conference, but the team has won five of its six matchups with schools from that league. This will be the first-ever meeting between these two schools on the gridiron. The Falcons have had trouble taking flight offensively, producing just 17.0 ppg behind a mediocre 316.7 total ypg. The ground game has been downright abysmal, as the Falcons are churning out a mere 98.3 ypg on an equally pathetic 3.3 ypc. Fortunately quarterback Tyler Sheehan has played strong throughout points of this season, and currently has 624 yards behind a solid 62.7 completion rating. However, the signal caller has thrown just two touchdowns thus far against three interceptions. Bowling Green's offense sputtered once again in its recent loss to Boise State, as the Falcons tallied just seven points on just 307 total yards. As usual the ground game did not help much, as BGSU rushed for just 103 yards on 2.9 ypc. Even Sheehan had trouble in the contest, throwing for just 200 yards on 21-of-34 passing. The signal caller also tossed an interception and was sacked twice. The defense has not been very helpful, as the Falcons are surrendering 376.7 ypg, and that has led to 26.3 ppg. The main troubles for BGSU has been its inability to stop the run, as opponents are pounding the Falcons' front line for 151.0 ypg. Fortunately the defense has been able to make some big plays thus far, as the team has forced five turnovers, while also collecting eight sacks. Bowling Green's struggles against the run continued against Boise State, as the Falcons were pounded for 160 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Overall the defense surrendered 340 yards, and although the defense only allowed 16 first downs, BSU was still able to convert 5-of-10 third down chances and all three red zone appearances. The Cowboys might be 2-2 on the season, but the offense has been inconsistent. Wyoming is currently averaging a pathetic 256.5 ypg, and that lack of production would explain why the team is only posting 10.0 points per matchup. The passing attack has really struggled at 103.2 ypg. Fortunately the ground game has been slightly better, as the team is churning out 153.2 ypg on 4.1 ypc. Devin Moore has been the main option out of the backfield, as the tailback has rushed for 294 yards and two scores on 5.3 ypc. The Cowboys had no answers for the BYU defense this past weekend, as the Pokes committed six turnovers in the 44-0 drumming. The Cowboys only finished with 273 total yards of production, and once again the majority of that yardage came from the ground attack, as Moore rumbled for 97 yards on just 14 totes. The lackluster display offensively has taken away from the success of Wyoming's defensive unit that is holding teams to just 310.0 total ypg. Wyoming has forced seven turnovers on the season, but the squad has struggled getting to the quarterback, and comes into this matchup with just two sacks. The Cowboys are limiting teams to just 169.8 ypg through the air, but has had trouble against the run, as opponents are averaging 140.2 ypg. Although the Cowboys were defeated by BYU 44-0, the defense tried to hold strong, allowing 364 yards. Wyoming could not make the big stop when it mattered most, as the defense surrendered 23 first downs. Neither team has been able to put forth a consistent effort offensively, so this will likely be a low scoring affair. With that said, the Cowboys are much tougher defensively, and should have no problem clipping the Falcons at home.
