NCAA Game Summary - U-N-L-V At Colorado State

Saturday, October 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Gartrell Johnson ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner with nine seconds to play, as the Colorado State Rams notched a 41-28 victory over the UNLV Rebels in a Mountain West Conference thriller at Hughes Stadium.

Rashaun Greer was virtually unstoppable in the passing game for CSU (3-2, 1-0 MWC), as he finished with eight catches for 211 yards, including a 46-yard TD reception. Billy Farris completed 15-of-21 passes for 294 yards.

For UNLV (3-3, 0-2), Omar Clayton went 14-of-26 for 173 yards, two TDs and an interception. Frank Summers was solid on the ground, rushing 20 times for 109 yards (5.4 ypc) and a touchdown.

Jason Smith put the Rams on the scoreboard first with a 24-yard field goal at the 10:13 mark of the opening quarter.

But the Rebels bounced back with a five-minute drive, capped by Ryan Wolfe's 13-yard touchdown run.

The Rams fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and three plays later, Clayton found Casey Flair for a three-yard touchdown pass.

But the Rams took control in the second quarter, highlighted by a pair of three-yard touchdown runs from Johnson, as CSU grabbed a 17-14 halftime lead.

Smith kicked a 29-yarder midway through the third quarter.

The Rams made it 24 unanswered points, when Farris hooked up with Greer for a long touchdown to extend their lead to 27-14.

But the Rebels came back to life in the fourth quarter. Summers capped a 10- play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge with just under 13 minutes to play.

With six minutes to go, Clayton threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jerriman Robinson to give UNLV a 28-27 lead.

But CSU's Johnson scored the dagger on a 10-yard run in the final seconds, and on the ensuing kickoff, John Mosure scooped up a fumble and returned it seven yards for a bonus touchdown.

With both teams finding success on the ground, the difference was CSU's ability to make big plays in the passing game. Farris averaged a whopping 14 yards per attempt.
