NCAA Game Summary - Eastern Michigan At Maryland

Saturday, September 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - In what was anything but a defensive battle, the Maryland Terrapins beat up on the Eagles of Eastern Michigan, 51-24, in non-conference play at Byrd Stadium.

Maryland (3-1) had 231 rushing yards and 486 yards of total offense on the day. Morgan Green ran for two scores and quarterback Chris Turner threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns for the Terps. Darius Heyward-Bey had 112 combined rushing and receiving yards and a touchdown for the home team as well.

In his first start of the season, quarterback Kyle McMahon threw for 278 yards on 25-of-37 and two touchdowns for the Eagles (1-3). Eight different Eagles caught passes from McMahon, led by Jacory Stone who had nine receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. Terrence Blevins led the Eagles on the ground with 61 yards on 10 carries and a score.

Maryland scored 17 straight points to open the game, beginning with a 23- yard field goal by kicker Obi Egekeze and touchdown runs of one and 20 yards by Green.

Eastern Michigan finally answered with 5:08 left in the second quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run by Blevins. However, the Terps responded 19 seconds later on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Turner to Heyward-Bey. With 44 seconds left before halftime McMahon connected with Josh Leduc on a 13-yard scoring strike making the score 24-14 going into the locker room.

Maryland opened the second half with a four-play drive that ended with a four-yard touchdown pass from Turner to Dan Gronkowski only 1:33 into the third quarter giving Maryland a 31-14 advantage. The Eagles and Terps exchanged short field goals (23 and 21 yards, respectively) to end the third quarter.

Egekeze kicked his third field goal of the day, this one from 33 yards, at the 11:46 mark of the fourth quarter. McMahon threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this one a two-yard effort to Stone, with just over eight minutes left in the game. Maryland tried a little trickery moments later as Heyward- Bay tossed a lateral to Danny Oquendo, who then threw it 43 yards to Isaiah Williams for a touchdown.

The Terps scored an insignificant touchdown with just over a minute to play on an eight-yard run by Josh Portis, leaving Maryland with the 27-point decision.

EMU had lost its previous three games against Maryland by a combined 132-19 score.
