Report: Jones Resigns As Hawaii Coach

POSTED: 1:39 am EST January 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - June Jones has reportedly resigned as head coach of the Hawaii Warriors, after leading the football team to its most successful season in program history.

The Honolulu Advertiser reported Saturday that Jones resigned that same morning, citing his close friend, Al Souza. Listed as main reasons for leaving the Rainbow State are a lack of loyalty and commitment from Hawaii's athletic department.

Hawaii's star quarterback Colt Brennan, who was a finalist for this year's Heisman Trophy, gave a series of interviews prior to the 2007 football season in which he complained about the lack of funding the football program gets from the school. Among his complaints were shoddy practice fields and poor training facilities.

Not much has apparently changed at Hawaii since, despite a 12-0 regular season and the school's first-ever berth in the Bowl Championship Series, which ended in a 41-10 loss to Georgia.

Jones, 54, is 76-41 in nine seasons at Hawaii. He is earning $800,016 this year, on a contract which expires June 30. He has reportedly been offered a deal for $1.7 to $2 million per year to be the head coach at Southern Methodist University.

Jones has also spent time in the NFL as head coach of the Falcons and interim coach of the Chargers.
