NCAA Game Summary - Western Kentucky At Indiana

Saturday, August 30, 2008

(Sports Network) - Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for two long scores to lead the Hoosiers to a 31-13 season-opening triumph over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

Lewis finished with 185 yards rushing on nine carries for Indiana (1-0), while connecting with receiver Andrew Means six times for 63 yards.

For Western Kentucky (0-1), K.J. Black completed 19-of-31 passes for 219 yards, targeting Jake Gaebler six times for 81 yards and a touchdown, and Quinterrance Cooper five times for 83 yards.

After punting on their opening possession, the Hoosiers got on the board first with Lewis' 75-yard touchdown scamper at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter.

Kicker Austin Starr gave the Hoosiers a 10-0 lead with a 28-yard field goal with 2:33 to play in the first quarter, capping off a 10-play, 56-yard drive.

An 11-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Ray Fisher gave Indiana a 17-0 cushion with 11:12 to play in the half.

The Hilltoppers were forced to punt on all six of their first-half possessions, but they finally cracked the scoreboard at the 9:42 mark of the third quarter, on Zac Minturn's 27-yard field goal.

Minturn chipped in a 22-yarder later in the quarter to make it a 17-6 game.

But Indiana responded with a 7-play, 72-yard drive, punctuated by Damarlo Belcher's five-yard touchdown reception from Lewis.

WKU would not go quietly, as Gaebler scored on a nifty 32-yard reception from Black after a 12-play, 80-yard drive.

However on the first play of the ensuing possession, Lewis, who served a four- month suspension in the offseason for violating team rules, broke the Hilltoppers' backs with another long touchdown run, this time covering 62 yards.

The Hoosiers finished with 297 yards on the ground (7.2 ypc), compared to 63 yards for WKU.
