NCAA Game Summary - Florida International At Iowa

Saturday, September 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Ricky Stanzi threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns, as he led the Iowa Hawkeyes to an overwhelming 42-0 victory over the Florida International Golden Panthers in non-league play at Kinnick Stadium.

Shonn Greene powered the ground game for Iowa (2-0), rushing for 130 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. Jake Christensen also saw time under center for the Hawkeyes, and completed 8-of-12 passes for 99 yards and one score.

Paul McCall and Wayne Younger both saw time on the field for FIU (0-2), however neither quarterback was very effective. McCall only threw for 55 yards in the contest, and also finished the game with two interceptions. As for Younger, he completed 11-of-20 passes for 107 yards, but was sacked three times.

The Hawkeyes wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter, as Greene rumbled into the end zone on an 11-yard run to give Iowa a 7-0 edge.

A 59-yard touchdown pass from Stanzi to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, and a 17- yard touchdown run by Paki O'Meara pushed the Hawkeyes' lead to 21-0 in the first frame.

The second stanza saw more of the same dominance from Iowa, as Stanzi hooked up with Brandon Myers on a 23-yard scoring strike.

The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 35-0 when Stanzi connected with Colin Sandeman for an eight-yard touchdown strike.

After a scoreless third frame, Sandeman was on the receiving end of another touchdown pass, as Christensen found the open receiver for a 23-yard scoring strike.

That would be more than enough points for Iowa, which used suffocating defensive play to hold the Golden Panthers scoreless through the contest.

The Hawkeyes racked up 512 total yards of offense in the win, while FIU only collected 218 total yards.
