GAME NOTES: Two teams looking for their first league win will collide at Memorial Stadium this Saturday afternoon, as the Indiana Hoosiers host the Iowa Hawkeyes in a Big Ten Conference showdown. The Hawkeyes soared out of the gates this season with three wins, but since then the team has dropped three matchups in a row, including a tough 16-13 setback to Michigan State this past weekend. Iowa has dropped six of its last seven road games dating back to last season, and that includes the team's two losses on the road this year. As for the Hoosiers, they are also in the midst of a three-game losing skid, as the team fell this past weekend, 16-7, to Minnesota. Indiana, which is 0-2 in league play thus far, has collected just 10 Big Ten victories in the last six seasons. After this contest, the Hoosiers will return home to host the Northwestern Wildcats. The Hawkeyes hold a solid, 38-27-4 edge over the Hoosiers in the all-time series, but Indiana has won the last two meetings, including a 38-20 victory this past season.

The Hawkeyes might be 3-3 on the year, but the team's three setbacks have come by a combined nine points. Iowa has been impressive offensively, averaging 381.0 total ypg, but the majority of the success has come from the ground attack that is producing 180.3 ypg. Shonn Greene has been a monster in the backfield for Iowa, rushing for 822 yards and five touchdowns on 5.5 ypc. Ricky Stanzi has been mediocre under center for Iowa, as the quarterback has thrown for 822 yards, while completing 65.0 percent of his throws. Stanzi however, only has five TD passes against four interceptions. The Hawkeyes' offensive unit had trouble this past weekend, scoring just 13 points in a loss to Michigan State. Greene was the only real source of production, as the tailback rumbled for 157 yards on 5.2 ypc. Stanzi did not enjoy the same success, as the quarterback threw for just 158 yards and one score. Stanzi also tossed an interception in the loss, and was sacked three times.

The strength for Iowa has been the play of the defense which is limiting opponents to just 281.2 ypg and 11.2 ppg. The Hawkeyes have been outstanding against the run all season, stifling the opposition and allowing just 98.8 ypg on 3.1 ypc. Another advantage for this unit has been its ability to make big plays, as Iowa has forced 12 takeaways, while also collecting 12 sacks. The defense put forth another tremendous effort this past weekend, holding Michigan State to just 275 total yards. Iowa even bottled up Javon Ringer, who tallied just 91 yards on 25 carries. However, despite the strong showing Iowa was unable to escape with a win. The one blemish for the Hawkeyes in the setback was their play inside their own 20-yard line, as Iowa allowed Michigan State to convert on all four of its red zone chances.

Much like their counterpart, the Hoosiers are currently in a slump. However, Indiana has still performed at a high level offensively, averaging 421.4 total ypg, which has led to 26.4 ppg. The Hoosiers have dominated the opposition on the ground, rumbling for 209.0 rushing ypg on 5.4 ypc. Kellen Lewis has been the main source of production for the Hoosiers, as the quarterback is leading the ground attack with 375 yards to go along with three touchdowns. Lewis has also done well under center for Indiana, completing 60.9 percent of his throws for 817 yards. However, the signal caller has thrown just four touchdowns, while also tossing four interceptions. Unfortunately, the Hoosiers were shut down this past weekend in a 16-7 setback to Minnesota. Indiana was held to just 293 total yards, including just 49 yards on 24 carries. Lewis was unable to do much in the game, rushing for just 18 yards, while also throwing for just 167 more yards on 15-of-21 passing.

On the defensive side of the football the Hoosiers have been mediocre at best, surrendering 344.8 total ypg, and that has led to 23.2 ppg. The main issue for Indiana has been its inability to stop the pass, as opponents are averaging 222.8 ypg through the air. The defensive unit has also been unable to produce game-changing plays, as the team has forced just eight turnovers, while recording only 12 sacks. Indiana's problems against the pass continued in the loss to Minnesota, as the Hoosiers were torched for 274 yards. Overall the defense allowed just 333 total yards, and limited the Golden Gophers to just 16 points. Surprisingly, the defense did force two turnovers in the loss and also sacked the quarterback on four different occasions. Jammie Kirlew was outstanding in the contest, grabbing 10 tackles to go along with 2.5 sacks.

The Hoosiers can not continue to rely solely on Lewis, and for them to be successful this weekend other players will need to step up their production. It should be a tough road matchup for the Hawkeyes, but if they can contain Lewis, they should pick up a huge win away from home.
