Jayhawks Remain Unbeaten Ahead Of Showdown With Missouri

Saturday, November 17, 2007

(Sports Network) - Todd Reesing completed 21-of-26 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns, leading fourth-ranked Kansas to a 45-7 romp over Iowa State, and into position to snag the number-two spot in the BCS standings.

Reesing was nearly perfect in the first half, completing all but one of his 18 pass attempts in helping KU build a 28-7 lead that the defense made stand up in the final 30 minutes. He was playing on a sore ankle that limited his mobility somewhat, but the large margin allowed Jayhawks head coach Mark Mangino to rest his quarterback during the fourth quarter and go with former starter-turned-wide receiver Kerry Meier under center.

Meier was 9-for-9 passing for 101 yards and a score after catching three passes - including one touchdown - for 41 yards. Jake Sharp and Brandon McAnderson powered the ground game by combining to rush for 153 yards on 24 carries.

Dexton Fields had 109 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns and Marcus Henry caught four passes for 92 yards and a score for the Jayhawks (11-0, 7-0 Big 12), who will face sixth-ranked Missouri in Kansas City next Saturday to determine the Big 12 North champion.

If KU can win that game, the Jayhawks will face the South Division champion in the Big 12 title game, likely for a spot in the BCS National Championship game. Kansas came into this game third in the BCS. Oregon entered the week at No. 2 in the BCS, but lost at Arizona Thursday night. LSU, which holds the top spot, beat Ole Miss Saturday.

"(Being 11-0) means a lot to the people who work with our players every game, the players themselves, and the team as a whole," said Mangino. "It means a lot to them that they have been able to do something that hasn't been done in the past. I think it comes as a byproduct of just playing hard, winning and keeping your eye on the target, and these things seem to come about."

Bret Meyer was 16-for-28 for 103 yards passing for Iowa State (3-9, 2-6), while Austen Arnaud completed 8-of-15 for 79 yards.

Alexander Robinson rushed for 54 yards and provided the only touchdown for the Cyclones, whose season came to a resounding close despite having won two straight coming in.

The Jayhawks used their second possession of the game to drive 82 yards in 10 plays for a 7-0 lead. Reesing completed all four pass attempts on the way to the end zone, hitting Fields on a swing pass that went for a 17-yard score with 5:21 to go.

A pair of penalties helped move KU past midfield on its next march, and Reesing hooked up with Fields again for a 16-yard touchdown to take a 14-0 advantage with just under two minutes remaining in the first.

Arnaud moved the Cyclones inside the KU 30 on the ensuing possession with a 46-yard completion to Marquis Hamilton. But Sadiq Muhammed thwarted the potential scoring drive with an interception at the 19, and the Kansas offense made it hurt.

Four straight running plays and a pair of short passes moved the ball near midfield, and then Reesing found Henry loose in the secondary for a 51-yard touchdown and 21-0 cushion.

Meyer returned on ISU's next drive, and moved the offense downfield on a 13- play, 79-yard scoring drive aided by 39 yards worth of penalties. A defensive holding call on the Jayhawks' Phillip Strozier extended the drive on 4th-and-9 from the KU 31, and five plays later Robinson scampered in from six yards out to make it a two-touchdown game with 3:54 to go in the half.

But again, the Jayhawks offense struck quickly, moving 75 yards in just eight plays, culminating in Reesing's touchdown pass to Meier from 18 yards out to make it 28-7 with 1:56 on the clock.

KU's second drive of the third quarter resulted in a 37-yard field goal from Scott Webb, giving them a 31-7 edge more than seven minutes into the quarter.

The Kansas defensive unit continued to keep Iowa State at bay in the second half, and on its second drive of the fourth quarter, KU's offense - minus Reesing - marched for another score

Meier took over and drove KU 69 yards in 11 plays, finishing it off with a four-yard touchdown pass to Derek Fine for a 38-7 count.

Angus Quigley rolled into the end zone from 13 yards out with 2:39 remaining to provide the final Jayhawks score.

"I think Oregon lost the other night and it's unfolding the way we want," said Meier. "But like I said, we have to take care of business and take it one week and one step at a time and let it come to us. If we take care of our business, things will fall into place for us."

Game Notes

The Jayhawks and Hawaii are the only unbeaten teams left in Football Bowl Subdivision play...Kansas amassed 328 of its 566 total yards in the first half...Fields' 11 catches tied a school record...Robinson's touchdown was only the sixth rushing score allowed this season by the KU defense, which has surrendered just 19 touchdowns in all.
