NCAA Game Summary - Missouri At Kansas State

Saturday, November 17, 2007

(Sports Network) - Jeremy Maclin caught a pair of touchdown passes and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score, leading sixth-ranked Missouri to a 49-32 victory over Kansas State.

Maclin finished with a school-record 360 all-purpose yards and set a Football Bowl Subdivision freshman record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 2,309 yards, shattering the old mark of 2,026 set by Rutgers' Terrell Willis in 1993. He caught nine passes for 143 yards, added eight yards on two carries, returned six kickoffs for 194 yards and returned a pair of punts for 15 more, breaking the old Missouri all-purpose yardage mark of 333 set in 1998 by Devin West.

Chase Daniel completed 28-of-41 passes for 284 yards with four touchdowns for Missouri (10-1, 6-1 Big 12), which has won five in a row and will now play Kansas for the Big 12 North Division title next week in Kansas City. The Jayhawks remained unbeaten on the season with a 45-7 win over Iowa State Saturday.

"We're excited about the opportunity," Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel said of next week's showdown. "That place is going to be wild. That's going to be a lot of fun. They're playing great football, and we're obviously great rivals. It doesn't get better than that."

James Johnson ran for 172 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for Kansas State (5-6, 3-5), which has lost three in a row and needs a win next week at Fresno State to become bowl eligible.

Kansas State took the opening kickoff and immediately turned the ball over, as William Moore picked off a Josh Freeman pass on the third play from scrimmage. The Tigers took over at the K-State 15 and needed just two plays to reach the end zone, as Daniel found Maclin with an eight-yard scoring toss.

"He's an unbelievable guy," Daniel said about Maclin. "He's open a lot and we want to give him the ball as much as we can."

The Wildcats answered with a 55-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard field goal by Brooks Rossman, but Missouri didn't take long to answer.

Maclin took the ensuing kickoff at his own one-yard line and spun off a couple of tacklers before sprinting up the left sideline for a 99-yard return to make it 14-3.

Missouri got the ball back after a punt and drove to the Kansas State 31-yard line, but Daniel misfired on a fourth-down pass to give the ball back to the Wildcats.

This time, Kansas State answered quickly. After Johnson carried for three yards, he broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run. The point after was blocked, leaving the Wildcats down 14-9 in the closing seconds of a wild opening period.

The big plays continued in the second quarter, as Kansas State moved in front on a blocked punt. Courtney Herndon blocked Adam Crossett's punt and Ernie Pierce raced five yards into the end zone. Again, the point after was blocked and the Wildcats held a 15-14 advantage.

Maclin returned the following kickoff just 10 yards, but Missouri drove 81 yards in nine plays for the go-ahead score. A pass interference penalty and a 23-yard catch by Maclin helped set up Daniel's eight-yard touchdown pass to Martin Rucker.

Kansas State tacked on a 22-yard field goal by Rossman with 38 seconds left in the half to make it a 21-18 game, capping a 15-play, 88-yard march.

The Tigers struck quickly to start the second half, driving 77 yards on just six plays for a touchdown. Maclin caught a 36-yard pass to set up a two-yard scoring run by Tony Temple, who finished with 29 yards on three carries during the series.

Maclin then capped a 93-yard drive on Missouri's next series with a 44-yard touchdown reception to increase the cushion to 35-18.

Johnson fumbled on the next K-State possession, but it didn't cost the Wildcats, who scored late in the third on a 20-yard pass from Freeman to Pierce.

Daniel threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Rucker just under 4 1/2 minutes into the fourth and a Wildcat fumble on the next series led to a one-yard scoring run by Temple to make it 49-25 with 6:25 remaining.

Jordy Nelson caught a 13-yard TD pass from Freeman just over four minutes later to account for the final margin.

"We did some nice things today, but against a great time like this you can't do a couple nice things. You've got to do a lot of things right," said Kansas State head coach Ron Prince.

Freeman finished the game 26-of-41 for 256 yards, while Nelson hauled in eight passes for 94 yards. Freeman became the first K-State quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season.
