Ruston, LA -- (Sports Network) - Zac Champion threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to a hard-fought 27-23 win over the San Jose State Spartans in Western Athletic Conference action at Aillet Stadium. Champion, who survived a pair of sacks and an interception, converted 22-of-36 passing for the Bulldogs (5-6, 4-3 WAC). The Spartans (4-7, 3-4) were paced by Adam Tafralis who hit on 28-of-47 for 369 yards and a score, adding a rushing touchdown to the mix as well. SJSU put the first points on the board early in the opening quarter as Jared Strubeck knocked through a 28-yard field goal for the visitors. LaTech responded with a three-yard touchdown pass from Champion to Shane Womack less than four minutes later. Another field goal by Strubeck, this from 20 yards away, cut the deficit to just a point for the Spartans, but that was before the Bulldogs closed out the first half on a 17-point run. Champion has scoring passes of 49 and six yards to Phillip Livas and Philip Beck, respectively, while Danny Horwedel converted a 20-yard field goal of his own to push the home team to a 24-6 halftime advantage. James Callier's 23-yard TD reception in the third made the score 24-13, while a four-yard TD run by Tafralis brought SJSU even closer at 24-20. But from there the teams traded field goals, Strubeck making a 22-yard effort and Horwedel a 41-yard try for the Bulldogs to seal the four-point victory. San Jose State surrendered 413 yards of offense, but refusing to give up was Matt Castelo who produced 21 total tackles, four behind the line of scrimmage and two of those against Champion for a loss of 21 yards.
