Badgers Survive Scare From Minnesota To Retain Bunyan's Axe

Saturday, November 17, 2007

(Sports Network) - Zach Brown rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns as 24th-ranked Wisconsin defeated Minnesota, 41-34, at the Metrodome.

Tyler Donovan completed only 6-of-13 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown and an interception for Wisconsin (9-3, 4-3 Big Ten), which has won four of its last five and retained the Paul Bunyan Axe, awarded annually to the winner of the rivalry between the bordering state schools. Donovan also rushed 10 times for 61 yards and a score. Travis Beckum had five grabs for 89 yards and a TD.

Adam Weber was 21-of-37 passing for 352 yards with three touchdowns and two picks for Minnesota (1-11, 0-8), which has lost 10 straight games. Weber also rushed for 87 yards on 15 carries, while Eric Decker had six catches for 125 yards and a pair of scores.

With Minnesota holding a slim 13-10 lead to start the second half, the Gophers went three-and-out to begin the third quarter and Wisconsin took over. David Gilreath returned Justin Kucek's punt 56 yards to the Minnesota 18 and on the second play of the drive, Brown went around left guard, made a nice cut move and sprinted the rest of the way for a 16-yard touchdown run, giving the visitors a 17-13 lead.

Taylor Mehlhaff's 20-yard chip shot put the Badgers up 20-13 with 5:48 left in the third.

Minnesota tied the contest at 20 with just under two minutes to play in the third when Duane Bennett ran around the left side for a two-yard TD score, capping a 10-play, 79-yard drive.

In a back-and-forth second half, the Badgers answered with a score of their own. Brown ripped off a 60-yard run on the first play of the set, moving the ball to the Minnesota 3. Then, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Bill Rentmeester powered his way into the end zone from a yard out, putting Wisconsin up 27-20.

Following a modest set by the Gophers, Wisconsin got the ball back and found the end zone once again. Donovan hooked up with Travis Beckum for a 16-yard score to give the Badgers a two-touchdown lead. On the play Beckum hurt his right shoulder and did not return.

Minnesota was not about to go quietly, however. Decker pulled in a four-yard TD from Weber to cut the deficit to 34-27, but Wisconsin responded when Brown ran it in from four yards out. In a wild play, the Gophers responded again when Ralph Spry grabbed a tipped ball off a fellow Gopher and raced into the end zone for a 71-yard score to cut its deficit to 41-34 with 4:37 left.

"Kind of like the season has gone," Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster said about the loss. "Our kids fought their guts out, they played extremely hard and did a lot of things well today. I couldnt be more proud of them."

The Badgers were unable to mount a sustained drive and were forced to punt. Brad DeBauche's punt was downed on the Minnesota eight with 1:35 left in the fourth quarter and the Gophers out of time outs. On the second play of the set Weber was picked of by Ben Strickland and the Badgers ran out the clock, preserving the win.

"We had some opportunities in the first half that we were not able to capitalize on," Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema said. "However, we were able to persevere and pay better in the second half. We scored early and we were able to get some key plays to get the victory. As a result, we kept Paul Bunyans axe."

Wisconsin wasted little time putting points on the board in the early going. Donovan led the offense on an impressive drive, but facing 3rd-and-8 on the Minnesota 11, the signal-caller's pass intended for Garrett Graham fell incomplete and Wisconsin had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Mehlhaff.

Joel Monroe's 47-yard field goal with 5:27 left in the opening quarter tied the contest at 3-3.

After Wisconsin was forced to punt on its next series, the Golden Gophers went back to the attack. Starting on their own 46, Weber ripped off an 18- yard run on the second play of the series, then on 4th-and-inches, Justin Valentine hammered ahead for the first down to keep the drive alive. On the first play of the second period, Weber found Decker in the end zone for a 23- yard touchdown, giving the home team a 10-3 lead.

Following a Kyle Theret interception of Donovan on Wisconsin's ensuing series, Minnesota tacked on three more when Monroe drilled a 24-yard field goal to give the Golden Gophers a 10-point advantage with 12:10 left in the first half.

With Minnesota driving following a missed field goal by Mehlhaff, Weber overthrew his intended target and had his pass picked off by Shane Carter and returned to the Wisconsin 30. The Badgers took full advantage of the miscue and marched 70 yards on 10 plays, with Donovan scampering for an eight-yard TD with 1:59 left in the quarter, making it a 13-10 game. On the drive Donovan was taken to the locker room to be examined after turning an ankle.

After Minnesota went three-and-out and was forced to punt, Gilreath gave the Badgers great field position, returning the kick 51 yards to the Golden Gophers 26 with under a minute to play in the half. With Allan Evridge in for Donovan, the Badgers offense stalled and Mehlhaff's 46-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright, leaving Minnesota with a 13-10 lead heading into the intermission.
