GAME NOTES: Big Ten action will take place this Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, when the Illinois Fighting Illini host the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Golden Gophers have been one of the biggest surprises in the Big Ten, winning five of their first six contests. This past weekend Minnesota collected a tough, 16-7 victory over Indiana, pushing its conference record to an even 1-1. Since 2006, the Golden Gophers have been terrible on the road, losing 10 of their last 13 games away from home. As for the Fighting Illini, they have won three of their last four matchups, including a convincing, 45-20 win over Michigan this past weekend. From 2003 to 2006 the Illini racked up just two conference wins, but since the beginning of last season, Illinois has performed much better in league play, winning seven of its last 10 games. Illinois snapped a three-game losing skid to Minnesota this past season with a 44-17 win, but despite the setback, the Golden Gophers still hold a slim, 31-27-3 edge in the all-time series.

The Golden Gophers have been balanced on offense this season, and that has been the main reason for the team's success. Minnesota is pounding the football for 131.3 ypg on the ground, while also averaging 238.0 ypg through the air. That production has led to an impressive 30.3 ppg. The Gophers do not possess a top option in the backfield, but the top tailback for Minnesota has been DeLeon Eskridge, who has rushed for 354 yards and five touchdowns. Adam Weber has been simply sensational under center thus far, as the quarterback has completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 1,428 yards. Weber has tossed eight touchdowns on the year, but more importantly, the signal caller has thrown just two interceptions. Weber's main target has been Eric Decker, who is leading the team with 50 receptions, 696 yards, and four TDs. This past weekend the Gophers used a heavy dose of their passing attack in the win over Indiana, as Weber threw for 274 yards on 22-of-37 passing. Decker hauled in 13 receptions in the win for 190 yards, but the lone offensive touchdown was by Shady Salamon.

Not to be overlooked has been the success of the defense, which is limiting the opposition to just 18.5 ppg. Minnesota is surrendering 354.3 total ypg, but what has propelled this unit is its ability to make big plays, as the Gophers have forced 17 turnovers on the year, while also recording 12 sacks. In the recent win over Indiana, the Gophers put forth a tremendous effort, holding the Hoosiers to just 293 total ypg, including just 49 rushing yards on 2.0 ypc. Minnesota was able to collect three takeaways in the win, and also put tremendous pressure on the quarterback, grabbing four sacks. Willie VanDeSteeg was outstanding in the win, collecting seven tackles and two sacks, while Ryan Collado also grabbed seven stops to go along with a forced fumble.

The Illini are one of the more explosive teams in the Big Ten and head into this pivotal matchup averaging a whopping 455.8 total ypg. Daniel Dufrene and Juice Williams have been a dangerous tandem out of the backfield, as Dufrene has posted 442 yards on 6.0 ypc, while Williams has rushed for 404 yards and four TDs. Williams has also done a strong job with his arm, throwing for 1,215 yards and 11 scores against six interceptions. Six different players have caught a touchdown pass this year, but the best option has been Arrelious Benn, who has grabbed 25 passes for 382 yards to go along with two scores. The Illini continued their strong offensive play this past weekend, racking up 501 total yards in the 25-point win over Michigan. Williams was unstoppable in the win, rushing for 121 yards and two TDs, while also throwing for 310 yards and two more scores.

The problem for the Illini has come on the defensive side of the football, as Illinois is currently allowing 371.0 total ypg, which has led to 29.6 ppg. The defensive unit has struggled against the run and pass, surrendering 159.8 ypg on the ground, while being torched for 211.2 ypg through the air. Surprisingly, the Illini were outstanding in the recent win over Michigan, as the defense held Michigan to just 319 total yards, including just 69 rushing yards on 2.0 ypc. Illinois forced two turnovers in the win, but more importantly the defense put tremendous pressure on the QB, racking up four sacks against the Wolverines. Brit Miller led the way defensively, as the linebacker posted nine tackles and four TFLs, two of which were sacks.

The Gophers have done a solid job defensively, but this will be the most dangerous offensive unit Minnesota has faced to this point. If Illinois can limit Minnesota's offensive production, the Illini should score enough points to remain undefeated at home.
