Nutt Headed To Ole Miss

POSTED: 10:58 am EST November 27, 2007

(Sports Network) - Ole Miss wasted little time finding a new head football coach, as Houston Nutt will fill the vacancy created when Ed Orgeron was dismissed on Saturday.

Athletic director Pete Boone confirmed Tuesday morning that the school has reached an agreement with Nutt to become the 36th head coach in the program's history. A press conference has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Nutt wasn't even out of a job for more than 24 hours, as he resigned from his position at Arkansas on Monday evening. Nutt guided the Razorbacks to a record of 75-48 over the past 10 years, culminating with a 50-48 triple-overtime win at LSU last Friday.

Officials at Arkansas reportedly offered Nutt a two-year contract extension after the upset victory.

Before his stint at Arkansas, Nutt coached four years at Murray State and one at Boise State. His overall collegiate record stands at 111-70.

The Rebels parted company with Orgeron, who managed a record of just 10-25 in three years at Oxford. Ole Miss was 3-9 this past season and finished 0-8 in SEC play, marking the school's first winless conference campaign since 1982.

2007 SEASON IN REVIEW: The Ole Miss program clearly hit rock bottom in 2007, finishing with a 3-9 overall record, including losses in all eight of its SEC contests. After beating Memphis by two points in the opener, the Rebels suffered four consecutive defeats, and while they did play Florida tough, the other three losses during that stretch all came by wide margins. Then, after shutting out Louisiana Tech by a 24-0 final, Ole Miss was downed in succession by Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn. A narrow win over Northwestern State halted the slide, but the regular season was rounded out with setbacks against LSU and Mississippi State.
