NCAA Game Summary - Ole Miss At Mississippi State

POSTED: 6:28 pm EST November 23, 2007

(Sports Network) - Adam Carlson's 48-yard field goal with 12 seconds to play proved to be the game winner as the Mississippi State Bulldogs captured a 17-14 win over the Ole Miss Rebels in SEC action at Scott Field.

The successful field goal for the Bulldogs (7-5, 4-4 SEC) completed a comeback bid that began midway through the fourth quarter with the home team trailing 14-0. The victory means the Bulldogs are likely headed to their first bowl game since 2000.

Wesley Carroll helped bring the Bulldogs back by converting 13-of-28 for 130 yards and a score as the squad won for the third time in the last four outings.

The Rebels (3-9, 0-8), losers of two straight and five of the last six, were led by B.J. Green Ellis who gained 117 yards and scored once on 29 attempts, while signal-caller Brent Schaeffer converted just 10-of-30 for 115 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The only scoring in the first half came courtesy of Green-Ellis who raced 14 yards into the end zone early in the opening frame to provide the Rebels with what would become a 7-0 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter Ole Miss added to the lead with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Schaeffer to Shay Hodge, but from then on the Rebel offense fell silent.

With 7:51 to play in the game Carroll connected with Anthony Dixon on a four- yard scoring strike to cut the deficit to 14-7. Five minutes later it was the special teams that made some noise for the Bulldogs, as Derek Pegues returned a punt 75 yards for the score to knot the game at 14-14, setting the scene for Carlson's heroics in the waning moments.

Mississippi State picked up the victory despite recording just 10 first downs and converting 2-of-12 on third down on the afternoon.
