NCAA Game Summary - Nevada At San Jose State

POSTED: 10:16 pm EST November 24, 2007

(Sports Network) - Adam Tafralis threw for 342 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the San Jose Spartans to a 27-24 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack in a Western Athletic Conference showdown.

Tafralis completed 29-of-46 pass attempts and he was intercepted just once, as SJSU (5-7, 4-4 WAC) snapped a five-game losing streak against Nevada. David Richmond pulled down nine balls for 143 yards in the win, while Kevin Jurovich caught eight passes for 91 yards and a score.

Colin Kaepernick led the way for the Wolf Pack (5-6, 3-4) by throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-22 attempts. He also rushed for 72 yards on nine carries. His main target was Marko Mitchell, who finished with four catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

Jurovich pulled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Tafralis just past the midway point of the opening quarter to give SJSU the lead.

The Wolf Pack responded late in the frame and tied the game at 7-7 with a Kaepernick 64-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Nevada took the lead behind a Brandon Fragger nine-yard touchdown run.

Jared Strubeck hit a 20-yard field goal midway through the second quarter and SJSU trailed 14-10.

Kaepernick, though, hooked up with Mitchell on a 59-yard scoring strike and Brett Jaekle nailed a 36-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, giving Nevada a 24-10 lead at the break.

The Spartans cut into the Nevada' lead midway through the third quarter, as Tafralis tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Brian Elledge.

Strubeck connected on a 39-yard field goal just 13 seconds into the final frame and SJSU was down by just four points.

With just under 12 minutes to play, Jacob French rumbled 13 yards for a touchdown to push the Spartans ahead, 27-24.

Nevada had a chance to tie the game, but Jaekle's 37-yard field goal attempt with 26 seconds left was off the mark.

Nevada
2007 SEASON IN REVIEW: While it is certainly not something the Nevada Wolf Pack is going to advertise to highly these days, the team's 23-0 loss to New Mexico in last year's New Mexico Bowl was the ended a 329-game scoring streak, dating back to 1980. Three weeks prior the offense was just fine as it rang up a 49-10 triumph over Louisiana Tech to finish the regular season at 6-6 and earn a postseason berth. Considering how badly the 2007 season started for the Pack, earning an extra game was rather remarkable. The team opened with a meeting against nationally-ranked Nebraska and was tossed around and looked rather listless in a 52-10 setback. The following week Nevada suffered a 36-31 loss to Northwestern, also on the road, which put the possibility of a postseason in real jeopardy. Nevada earned a bit of a reprieve and gained some measure of confidence with a 52-17 blowout of Nicholls State at home and then took the Fremont Cannon with a 27-20 triumph over in-state rival UNLV. However, the Pack did itself no favors by scheduling Western Athletic Conference powers Fresno State and Boise State in back-to-back weeks. The contest with the Bulldogs at home left Nevada with a 49-41 loss, but the BSU meeting provided for one of the most exciting games in college football, a four-overtime decision that fell in favor of Boise on the blue turf, 69-67.
