NCAA Game Summary - Florida International At North Texas

Sunday, October 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Paul McCall threw four touchdown passes to lead the Florida International Golden Panthers to a 42-10 win over the North Texas Mean Green in Sun Belt Conference action at Fouts Stadium.

McCall finished the outing 11-of-19 for 234 yards for FIU (2-3, 1-0 Sun Belt) as the squad picked up its second win in as many weeks.

The Mean Green (0-5, 0-1), losers of six straight dating back to last season, were paced by Giovanni Vizza who converted 32-of-46 passing for 274 yards, but he was sacked three times and had three passes picked off in the losing effort.

McCall opened the game's scoring with a 65-yard TD pass to T.Y. Hilton at the 5:11 mark of the first quarter. Hilton finished the contest with three catches for 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

FIU extended the lead to 14-0 when Alonzo Phillips returned a blocked punt 11 yards for a score less than three minutes later.

Before the end of the first half the Golden Panthers tallied two more touchdowns, the first coming on a 73-yard connection between McCall and Hilton and the other a 26-yard run by A'mod Ned to make the score 28-0 at the break.

Midway through the third McCall's third TD pass measured eight yards to Eric Kirchenberg to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive, making the score 35-0.

North Texas finally got on the board with just over five minutes remaining in the third as Jeremy Knott knocked through a 28-yard field goal.

In the fourth it was McCall again for FIU with a 28-yard TD pass to Greg Ellington to push the score to 42-3.

Down the stretch the Mean Green had one last gasp, a one-yard touchdown run by Micah Mosely to leave the visitors with the 32-point win.

UNT controlled the ball for almost 35 minutes on the night and generated 428 yards of offense, compared to 347 yards for Florida International. Heading into this week the Golden Panthers were ranked last in the nation in total offense with just 196.3 ypg and were 116th in scoring with an average of just 13.5 ppg.
