NCAA Game Summary - Air Force At Notre Dame

POSTED: 7:02 pm EST November 10, 2007

(Sports Network) - Shaun Carney threw for two scores and ran for another, leading the Air Force Falcons to a 41-24 road win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Carney completed 10-of-16 passes and finished with 120 yards through the air for Air Force (8-3). Chad Hall powered the ground game, running for 142 yards on 32 carries.

Jimmy Clausen threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns for Notre Dame (1-9), although he could not keep the Irish from avoiding their school-record sixth straight home loss.

Air Force opened the game with a 14-play drive that occupied 6:11 off the clock, but the Falcons were forced to settle for a 19-yard Ryan Harrison field goal.

Later in the first quarter, the Falcons' John Rabold picked up a fumble and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown, extending the Air Force lead to 10-0.

Notre Dame made it a 10-3 game midway through the second quarter, on a 28-yard field goal by Brandon Walker.

The Irish tied the game with 2:32 to play in the half, when Clausen and John Carlson hooked up for a two-yard touchdown pass.

But Air Force answered right back with a quick scoring drive, capped off by Spencer Armstrong's eight-yard touchdown run.

The Falcons opened the second half with another quick touchdown drive, this time scoring on a seven-yard pass from Carney to Sean Quintana.

Air Force began to pull away later in the quarter, when Carney threw a 10-yard scoring strike to Keith Madsen to push the Falcons' lead to 31-10 with 1:31 to play in the third.

But the Irish would not go quietly, as they responded with a 10-play, 57-yard scoring drive, punctuated by Clausen's 21-yard touchdown pass to David Grimes.

A 37-yard field goal by Harrison made it 34-17 Air Force with 10:07 to play.

Clausen pulled the Irish to within 10, on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Armando Allen with 7:56 to play, but the Falcons iced the game on Carney's one-yard touchdown plunge in the final two minutes.

The Notre Dame rushing attack netted just 58 yards on 38 carries (1.5 ypc), as the Irish yielded a 34:00-26:00 edge in time of possession.
