Beavers Stun Top-Ranked Trojans

Corvallis, OR -- (Sports Network) - Jacquizz Rodgers wasn't around for the celebration when Oregon State stunned USC two seasons ago.The freshman running back is now a part of history. Rodgers ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Lyle Moevao added a pair of touchdown tosses as Oregon State stunned No. 1 Southern California for the second time in three years, 27-21, on Thursday night. USC (2-1, 0-1 Pac-10) had given up an average of just 51 yards rushing through two games only to see Rodgers duck around, run past and shrug off defenders for over twice that yardage in the first half. The three-touchdown home underdog Beavers (2-2, 1-1) -- a team that was knocked off by Stanford before getting dominated at nationally-ranked Penn State -- attacked from the beginning kickoff against a Trojans squad fresh off a bye and a 35-3 rout of Ohio State. "Everybody knows how our season has gone and what happened at Penn State and the fact is I thought they learned from that," said Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. "Every game is about competing and competition and they came out and played. It got a little scary there, but they played and they scored. I am so proud of them." Oregon State's victory was its first over an Associated Press top-ranked team since a 3-0 victory over running back O.J. Simpson and USC on November 11, 1967. Riley's father, Bud, was an assistant coach on that Beavers team. USC had won 31 of the last 34 meetings, but its last four losses in the series have come in Corvallis. The Trojans have lost three of their last four games at Oregon State. "Our inability to stop Rodgers on the zone play was crucial," said USC coach Pete Carroll. "I am just beside myself. They didn't hide what they were doing, they just did it and we couldn't stop it. We couldn't tackle him. He had a great game, he did everything they wanted him to, and gave them every chance to control the ball and get first downs." Rodgers' 117-yard first half performance set the tone, as Oregon State opened up a 21-0 lead at halftime. "Rushing stats and turnover stats are always big and we out-rushed them by a lot," said Riley. "That is the major factor because USC had been running the ball well, and had only been giving up about 50 yards a game rushing." Moevao finished 18-of-28 for 167 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jacquizz's brother James Rodgers, who caught six passes for 36 yards. Mark Sanchez completed 18-of-29 passes for 227 yards with three second-half touchdown passes and one costly interception. The vaunted Trojans running game averaged only 3.9 yards per carry with Stafon Johnson posting the best numbers with 48 yards rushing. Damian Williams hauled in six passes for 94 yards and a score for USC. "We all had our share in this loss," said Sanchez. "It doesn't taste very good right now, but I want to wear all of it. As a quarterback and as this team's leader and team captain I can wear a loss like this." One of USC's quartet of running backs, Johnson, was stuffed on 3rd-and-1 on the game's first series, and the Beavers took the football right at the Trojans defense. Brady Camp hauled in an 11-yard pass on the first play, and Jacquizz Rodgers converted the same 3rd-and-1 with a seven-yard sprint to the Trojans 33-yard line. James Rodgers brought in a 14-yard pass later in the march, and he caught a wide receiver screen on the drive's scoring play, taking the football around left end and diving to the pylon for an eight-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The Trojans didn't pick up a first down yet again, unable to stem the momentum as Oregon State continued to roll on offense. Sammie Stroughter got into the act with a 13-yard connection across the middle and Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 23 yards over the next three rush attempts. The drive stalled thanks to a USC sack, but it set up field position for the second period. The Trojans didn't pick up a first down, and the Beavers took possession at their own 38-yard line. Jacquizz Rodgers took consecutive hand- offs for 10 and nine yards respectively before galloping for 15 yards later in the march. On 3rd-and-11 from the USC 16-yard line, Moevao found Stroughter for 14 yards. Jacquizz Rodgers did the rest, plunging into the pile and across the goal line for a two-yard score. USC picked up its initial first down on the next drive, but it ended once again without points after a Joe McKnight fumble. The Beavers methodically moved down the field for another score thanks to a bit of good fortune. The big plays were a pair of passes, a 15-yard strike to Stroughter and a 17- yard screen to Jacquizz Rodgers. The drive appeared destined for a field goal attempt, but a personal foul penalty kept it alive inside the Trojans 10-yard line. Oregon State took advantage as Moevao's out pass was deflected, and almost intercepted by a defender, right into the waiting arms of James Rodgers, who tip-toed his way inside the white chalk for a three-yard score and a 21-0 advantage. The third quarter was much different, as USC awoke from its slumber on both sides of the football. After stifling Oregon State on its first drive, the Trojans marched down the field to paydirt. Sanchez found David Buehler for a 14-yard completion on 4th-and-9 before hitting Ronald Johnson in stride from the right sideline for a 26-yard scoring strike. When the Trojans got the football back, it was more of the same. C.J. Gable sprinted around the left end for 14 yards, and Sanchez threw an 11-yard strike to Blake Ayles for 11 yards. A blown coverage allowed Williams to slip free on a deep out for a 29-yard TD reception that included a missed tackle at around the 10-yard line. The teams jockeyed for position into the fourth quarter before Oregon State threatened to make it a two-score game. However, back-up place kicker Sean Sehnem's 41-yard field goal was low and deflected to keep the score 21-14. Late in the contest, Greg Laybourn intercepted Mark Sanchez's errant pass and returned the pick to the two-yard line. Rodgers bowled into the end zone from there for the two-yard score. USC came back down the field and scored on Sanchez' 14-yard toss to Patrick Turner, but a failed onsides kick sealed Oregon State's incredible upset.
