NCAA Game Summary - Rice At S-M-U

Saturday, November 10, 2007

(Sports Network) - Clark Fangmeier's 31-yard field goal as time expired gave the Rice Owls a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the SMU Mustangs in a Conference USA showdown.

Chase Clement did it all for Rice (3-7, 3-3 C-USA), throwing for 364 yards and two scores, and running for 124 yards and another two touchdowns. Jarrett Dillard caught 13 passes for 128 yards and two TDs.

Justin Willis threw for 165 yards and four touchdowns for SMU (1-9, 0-6), and he ran for 69 yards and another score. Zack Sledge caught three touchdown passes, while DeMyron Martin powered the ground game with 137 yards on 16 carries.

Rice got on the board first, as Brandon King returned an interception 30 yards to pay dirt, although the extra-point attempt failed.

SMU got the ball back and drove 88 yards in five plays, with Willis and Sledge hooking up for a 21-yard touchdown pass and catch.

The Mustangs took a 14-6 lead on Willis's 15-yard touchdown pass to Sledge with 3:55 to play in the first quarter.

Not to be outdone, the Owls answered with a six-play, 68-yard drive, capped off by Clement's 13-yard touchdown pass to Dillard.

Rice took a 20-14 lead at the 5:41 mark of the second quarter, when Clement tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dillard. It was Clement's school-record 22nd touchdown pass of the season.

The Owls expanded their lead to 27-14 on another interception return for a touchdown, this one covering 31 yards by Andrew Sendejo.

But SMU closed out the first half with a long scoring drive, punctuated by Willis's three-yard touchdown run to make it a 27-21 game at halftime.

Willis threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter, the first a six-yarder to Sledge and the second a 16-yarder to Emmanuel Sanders.

Butler then scored on a one-yard plunge for the Mustangs, who entered the fourth quarter with a 42-27 lead.

But Clement scored on touchdown runs of eight and six yards in the fourth, pulling the Owls to within 42-40.

Rice went on a 10-play, 69-yard drive in the final 2:29 of regulation, setting up Fangmeier's game-winner from 31 yards.

Dillard now has 190 career receptions, becoming Rice's all-time leader in that department.
