Piscataway, NJ -- (Sports Network) - Rutgers University head football coach Greg Schiano has turned down an offer from Michigan and will remain head coach of the Scarlet Knights.

Various media sources reported that Schiano met with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin for an interview for the vacant head coaching job on Wednesday and that an offer was expected to be made shortly.

"I was contacted earlier this week about the Michigan coaching vacancy, but I have decided to remove my name from consideration," Schiano said in a statement released by the university. "I look forward to our third straight bowl game and to bringing a national championship to Rutgers and the state of New Jersey. I will have no further comment."

The 41-year-old Schiano has been credited for turning around the football program at Rutgers, leading the school to three consecutive bowl games after several losing seasons.

This year the Scarlet Knights went 7-5 in the regular season and will play against Ball State in the International Bowl.

After a highly successful 2006 campaign in which his team went 11-2 and won the program's first bowl game, Schiano agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2016 season.

The Wolverines need to replace Lloyd Carr, who announced his retirement on November 19, two days after Michigan closed the regular season with a 14-3 loss to arch-rival Ohio State.

Carr guided Michigan to a record of 121-40 with five Big Ten titles and the 1997 national championship in his 13 seasons.
