McCoy And Longhorns Dominate Owls

Saturday, August 30, 2008

(Sports Network) - Colt McCoy threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 103 yards and a score, as the No. 11 Texas Longhorns rolled to a 52-10 victory over Florida Atlantic in the season opener for both teams.

McCoy was 24-for-29 passing and completed his first 13 passes in leading the Texas (1-0) offensive attack to 503 net yards. The junior signal-caller spread the ball around, as four different Longhorn receivers caught touchdown passes including Blaine Irby, who hauled in a game-high seven receptions for 62 yards. Vondrell McGee gained 63 yards on 12 attempts with a touchdown while Cody Johnson also found the end zone and ran for 38 yards.

FAU (0-1) quarterback Rusty Smith was 15-of-31 for 253 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year led the Owls to a handful of promising drives, but two first-half turnovers derailed any momentum the team had built. Jamari Grant had four catches for 93 yards while Rob Housler caught the Owls' lone touchdown of the day, one of two receptions for 53 yards.

An FAU fumble on the opening possession gave Texas the ball on its own 39 and McCoy marched the Longhorns 61 yards on eight plays as Johnson capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge with 8:48 to play in the first quarter.

McCoy continued to fire on all cylinders on the Longhorns second drive going 5-for-5 passing for 48 yards and a 25-yard dash before hooking up with Chris Ogbonnaya on a two-yard touchdown toss with 3:15 remaining in the first to make the score 14-0.

The Owls continued to make progress in moving the ball, taking the ensuing possession 74 yards to the Texas eight-yard-line, buoyed by a 62-yard strike from Smith to Grant. However, the Owls were again pained by turnovers as Smith had a 2nd-and-goal pass tipped and intercepted by Ryan Palmer in the end zone.

After a Texas punt, Florida Atlantic was finally able to make a drive count when Warley Leroy hit a field goal from 31 yards out to cap an eight-play, 46- yard drive that ended less than two minutes into the second stanza.

Texas answered with an 80-yard, 10-play drive where McCoy again was a perfect 5-for-5 with a 12-yard run to set up a nine-yard scoring strike from McCoy to Jordan Shipley in the back right corner of the end zone for a 21-3 Texas lead with 9:01 to go in the first half.

McCoy took the ball in on his own from two yards out on the Longhorns' next possession, an eight-play, 52-yard drive, to make it a 28-3 game with just over three minutes remaining before the half.

Just when Texas seemed to be in total control, the Owls took the ball 68 yards in just 1:45 and Smith hooked up with Housler on a 20-yard post pattern at the four-yard-line as the wideout took it in for the score to cut the halftime deficit to a manageable 28-10.

Texas found themselves in familiar territory to start the second half as McGee scored on a seven-yard run to finish off a 70-yard drive on just four plays, aided by an Owls 15-yard personal foul penalty, as Texas pushed its lead to 35-10 just over a minute into the second half.

Texas then blocked a punt on the Owls' second possession and took over on the FAU 17-yard-line. Four plays later, McCoy found Irby for a five-yard touchdown and a 42-10 lead a little under halfway through the third quarter.

A Hunte Lawrence 40-yard field goal with 13:29 remaining in the game upped the edge to 45-10 and John Chiles entered for McCoy and closed out the scoring by connecting with Jam Kirkendoll on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 8:24 still on the clock.
