GAME NOTES: The Michigan Wolverines will try to return to the win column when they host the Toledo Rockets this Saturday afternoon in a non-league showdown in Ann Arbor. The Rockets have not been very explosive this season, as the team has dropped four of its first five games, including three in a row. The last time Toledo was on the field, the team was blanked by Ball State, 31-0. The Rockets have struggled on the road since 2006, posting a pathetic 2-11 record, and that includes the team's 1-1 mark away from home this year. As for the Wolverines, they fell to 2-3 on the year with an embarrassing, 45-20 setback at home to Illinois this past weekend. Fortunately the Wolverines will have a chance to rebound against a Mid-American Conference opponent. Michigan has been outstanding against MAC teams, posting a flawless 24-0 ledger against school's currently residing in that league. This will be the first ever meeting between Toledo and Michigan on the gridiron.

The Rockets were down right atrocious this past weekend against Ball State, as the squad racked up just 157 total yards and was held off the scoreboard. The Rockets' ground game was practically nonexistent, as the team finished with just 14 yards on 19 totes. It was a surprising turn of events for Toledo, which is averaging a strong 142.4 rushing ypg on the season. DaJuane Collins has been the main back for Toledo, rushing for 371 yards and four scores, but in the loss to Ball State the tailback finished with a mere 11 yards. Quarterback Aaron Opelt also struggled in the loss, as the signal caller threw for just 143 yards and was intercepted once. Despite the poor performance against BSU, Opelt has been decent this season, throwing for 869 yards and seven TDs against just three interceptions.

While the offense was ineffective, the Rockets' defensive unit was abused by the Cardinals, as Toledo was punished for 482 total yards. The defense struggled against the run and pass, allowing BSU to churn out 240 yards on the ground, while also surrendering 242 yards via the pass. Toledo has struggled against the run all season, as opponents are pounding the Rockets' front line for 171.4 rushing ypg. Out of the 22 touchdowns allowed by Toledo, 15 have come via the run. Overall this unit has been trampled on for an average of 371.6 total ypg, and that has led to a whopping 35.8 ppg. Another problem that has surfaced for this unit is its inability to make game-changing plays, as the Rockets have forced just seven turnovers, while recording just six sacks.

The Wolverine offense is still a work in progress under head coach Rich Rodriguez, as the team is only producing 20.6 ppg, behind just 291.8 total ypg. The ground game has been unable to find any consistency, as Michigan is churning out just 122.8 ypg on 3.6 ypc. Sam McGuffie has been the main option in the backfield, as the tailback has amassed 319 yards and three scores. Unfortunately the passing attack has been just has ineffective, as Steven Threet has completed just 49.6 percent of his passes. Despite his poor completion rating, Threet has thrown five TDs on the year, against just two interceptions. In the loss to Illinois this past weekend, the Wolverines continued to have trouble offensively, finishing with just 319 total yards. McGuffie led the ground game with 70 yards and one TD, while Threet threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively the Wolverines are only allowing 347.6 total ypg, but the squad has struggled keeping teams off the scoreboard, as opponents are averaging 27.2 ppg. The one area where this defensive unit has seen successful is against the run, as Michigan is limiting the opposition to just 109.0 ypg on 2.7 ypc. Surprisingly, the Wolverines were embarrassed this past weekend by Illinois, surrendering a whopping 501 total yards in the 25-point loss. More shockingly, the defense was pounded for 191 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Michigan could do nothing right in the loss, as the team did not force a turnover, and did not collect a single sack. Obi Ezeh was solid in the loss, as the linebacker grabbed 15 tackles, and 4.5 TFLs.

Last weekend the Wolverines were tortured by Juice Williams and the Illini, but fortunately Michigan's opponent this week does not possess any big time threats. Michigan does have some weaknesses, but even with its lack of success, expect the Wolverines to win convincingly at home this weekend.
