Tharp, Young Lead Boise St. To Romp Over Utah State

POSTED: 2:51 am EST November 11, 2007

(Sports Network) - Taylor Tharp completed 26-of-29 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns and Titus Young found the end zone three times, as 19th-ranked Boise State smoked Utah State, 52-0.

Young ran for two scores and also caught a pass for a TD, while Ian Johnson had 19 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos (9-1, 6-0 WAC), who have won eight in a row since their lone loss of the season to Washington on September 8.

Austin Pettis had a game-high eight catches for 67 yards and Jeremy Childs added seven receptions for 70 yards for Boise State, which intercepted Utah State quarterback Jase McCormick three times.

McCormick completed just 4-of-8 passes for 57 yards for the Aggies (0-10, 0-6), who have lost 16 in a row.

Boise State wasted no time exerting its dominance over Utah State, taking the opening kickoff and marching 72 yards on 10 plays. Young ended the drive when he scored from eight yards out.

The Aggies then went three-and-out and Leon Jackson blocked Utah State's punt. Ellis Powers picked up the loose ball and ran it back 16 yards to quickly make it 14-0.

Utah State made an effort to get back into the game, driving into Boise State territory on its next possession. However, the Broncos came up with yet another key special teams play, blocking Peter Caldwell's 42-yard field goal attempt.

Boise State recovered on its own 42-yard line and Kyle Brotzman's 22-yard field goal made it 17-0 with 1:30 left in the opening quarter.

Johnson fumbled inside Utah State's 10-yard line early in the second quarter, but Utah State quickly gave the ball back when Diondre Borel fumbled on the Aggies' 41-yard line. Boise State took advantage as Tharp hooked up with Richie Brockel on a short four-yard touchdown.

Caldwell then missed on a 52-yard attempt on USU's ensuing possession, leaving Boise State with good field position. Johnson made it 31-0 going into the locker room when he scored from 11 yards out to end an 11-play, 64-yard drive.

Young found the end zone twice in the third quarter. First he scored on a nine-yard run early into the second half. Then, with just 53 seconds left in the quarter, Young hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Tharp.

D.J. Harper's four-yard TD run in the fourth quarter capped the scoring.
