About Safe Alliance
Safe Alliance supports victims of domestic and sexual violence and child abuse and helps people build safe, healthy relationships. Through a continuum of life-saving services such as emergency shelter, trauma counseling, legal representation, and institutional advocacy services, Safe Alliance serves more than 10,000 people a year in Mecklenburg County.
We know that nationally, one in three women will be impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault. We know that each day in our country, three women will be murdered by their intimate partner. Tragically, we know that 15 million children witness domestic violence each year. But did you know that Charlotte Mecklenburg Police responded to more than 36,000 domestic violence-related calls last year? The Safe Alliance Domestic Violence Hotline answered more than 5,000 calls for help and information. Safe Alliance accompanied 5,135 women to court seeking domestic violence protective orders. The Clyde and Ethel Dickson Domestic Violence Shelter in Charlotte provided safety for 866 women and children in life-threatening situations. The shelter has 80 beds and was opened in 2013. It is a critical community asset that has been consistently operating at, or above, capacity. For many families, Safe Alliance is their place of “Sanctuary.”
