Brushing up with 9 School Tools

America's ToothFairy, a nonprofit specializing in the development of oral health education and engagement, donated 2,000 toothbrushes to the 9 School Tools drive.

Dental supplies have become high in demand for many in-school and afterschool programs. America's ToothFairy has distributed more than 82,000 dental care supplies to local schools and non-profit organizations serving children in need.

During the annual campaign, WSOC-TV asks the community to donate school supply items such as pencils, paper and backpacks to benefit local students.

While a toothbrush isn’t listed as a critical need on most students’ supply lists, studies have proven that not having proper oral hygiene can have a negative impact on a student’s academic performance.

“America’s ToothFairy knows the importance of children’s oral health when it comes to school performance and attendance,” said Shannon Weatherly, director of prevention, education and partnerships at America’s ToothFairy.

“With tooth decay being the number one chronic childhood disease in the U.S., it is also attributable to numerous days of school missed, due to dental pain and procedures,” said Weatherly.

"We believe ensuring children have the resources they need to start the school year off healthy and prepared increases the likelihood they will succeed in school and in life," Weatherly said.

From now until Aug. 26, you can donate school supplies and necessary items at over 40 donation locations across the Carolinas.  You can find your nearest donation location by clicking on this link for 9 School Tools Donation Locations.

“America’s ToothFairy hopes all children have the best possible chance at success in school and in life.  We believe this starts with a healthy mouth and leads to a healthy mind and body,” said Weatherly.
