Delta Sigma Theta sorority celebrates its anniversary with big surprise for 9 Food Drive

Updated:

The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta held a community food drive at the Delta Center on Beatties Ford Road Saturday.

The chapter, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, set a goal of collecting 75 bags of food.

On Friday, the women held group shopping outings at grocery stores across Mecklenburg County.

The sorority members showed up en masse Saturday. They blew past their goal of 75 bags of food, collecting 243 bags.

This was the single largest donation the 9 Food Drive has received so far this year.  All of the donations will be distributed by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, which supplies food to over 700 partner soup kitchens, pantries and shelters.
