Access to books can increase success for students

Updated:

Join the WAXN/WSOC-TV team tomorrow for the 64U Books for Kids Collection Day at WAXN/WSOC TV studios. You can bring your new and gently used children and teen book donations from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. to 1901 N. Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28206.

“Having these books being donated and begin distributed, and the greater awareness throughout the community of the importance of reading is really what I'm excited about,” said Cordelia Anderson, director of marketing and communications at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.

Eyewitness News Anchors Stephanie MaxwellBlaine Tolison and Allison Latos, along with other members from the Eyewitness News team, will be greeting viewers throughout the day.

A day full of fun and giving! Come out and join us as we help to improve student learning and achievement.

“There’s so much research that shows that kids who are reading at grade level at third-grade have a much greater chances of success throughout their life,” Anderson said. “If we get more books into the hands of more children and teens throughout our community - get them reading and get them succeeding in school, then that provides a level playing field for everyone in our community.”

In partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, WAXN-TV will collect new and gently used children and teen books until April 21, 2017. All donated books will be distributed by the library to area children and teens through Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Outreach Services without the need to check out and return the book.
