CMS Chief Operating Officer Finalist For Guilford Superintendent Position

POSTED: 5:33 pm EDT July 21, 2008
UPDATED: 6:29 pm EDT July 21, 2008

One of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ key leaders could be leaving.

Maurice Green, CMS’s chief operating officer and deputy superintendent, is one of two finalists for the job of superintendent of Guilford County Schools. The school district released the names of its finalists Monday afternoon.

CMS held a press conference to announce the news shortly after Guilford County released the names.

Green has been Superintendent Peter Gorman’s right-hand man since Gorman was hired just over two years ago. He’s been associated with CMS since 1993.

Guilford County Schools, the third largest school district in North Carolina, has been without a superintendent since February when Dr. Terry Grier resigned to take a similar position in San Diego. The head of the school board said he was impressed with Green’s professionalism.

The other finalist is Dr. Shirley Prince, superintendent of Scotland County Schools. She previously served as deputy superintendent of program services for Gaston County Schools. Last year, Prince was voted North Carolina Superintendent of the Year.

Guilford County Schools will hold a series of community forums in order for residents to meet Green and Prince. The forums begin Wednesday. The school board hopes to make a final decision by the end of July.
