Some CMS Schools Receive Failing Inventory Grades

Posted: 6:36 pm EST November 18, 2009

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have released the inventory audit reports from more than 30 schools, and they show that nine of those schools got failing grades for not properly tracking equipment.

The schools were randomly selected for the audit during the 2008-2009 school year and could receive grades ranging from above average to failing.

"Yes, we have some that do not have good processes in place," said CMS Chief Operating Officer Hugh Hattabaugh on Wednesday.

Hattabaugh said the schools are not required to track inventory worth less than $5,000, but they have been doing so with the help of a materials management Inventory system since 2002. The system requires each school to list inventory as it comes into the school and list exactly where it is. Each year, auditors check 35 schools at random and submit their reports.

Three of the schools located at Garinger High School were among the nine that got failing grades. Auditors said that they found items that were not listed in the schools' inventory list and others that had errors, meaning they may have been in the wrong classroom or office at the school.

Schools that get failing grades are required to complete a plan to correct the problems, and Hattabaugh said they will be audited again the following school year.

Schools that don't find missing inventory must eventually document it with a police report Eyewitness News has found several of those reports where computer equipment was listed as missing.

Hattabaugh said he could not put a dollar figure on any missing inventory, but some of that does surface even after a police report is filed.

The schools also track "fixed assets" worth $5,000 or more, and they said all of those are accounted for.
