CORNELIUS, N.C. -- School leaders want to name a new school after a man tied to integration, but some parents don't want it.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board members plan to name the high school in Cornelius Hough High School after William Hough, the North Mecklenburg High School principal who helped smooth integration in the 1960s.

The name is pronounced "huff." The parents are afraid the name will invite trouble, especially if people mispronounce it "Hoe High."

"Between either the name 'huff' or the name 'hoe,' they both have negative implications for any of the kids," said Heather Miller, a parent.

Others defend the name.

"I do understand the controversy, but, no, I do think the guy needs to be honored," Bob Irvin said.

But there's no telling if school leaders will change the name. They'd have to put it on a meeting agenda.
