'AMERICAN IDOL'

Cowell Rips Fantasia's 'Idol' Performance

David Vs. David Showdown Set For Tuesday Night

"American Idol" judge Simon Cowell has revealed what he was thinking when the camera caught him making a face as former "Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino performed on the show last week.

On Monday night, "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno showed Cowell the clip from last week on "The Tonight Show" and Simon said he was thinking, "What the bloody hell was that?"

Cowell said that the performance by Barrino looked more like a first-round audition disaster than a song by a former "Idol" champ.

Cowell said that he ended up looking at his fellow judges, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, wondering what was going on, thinking that Barrino's effort "wasn't her at her best."

Meanwhile, the "American Idol" showdown between the two Davids is set to take place Tuesday night.

David Archuleta and David Cook are vying for the latest "Idol" title and the winner will join the ranks of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks and Jordin Sparks.

But a second-place finish doesn't necessarily signal defeat. The runner-up usually gets a shot at a record deal, too, and in the case of singers like Clay Aiken, goes on to great success.

Even a fourth place finish by Chris Daughtry a couple years back didn't prevent the rocker from forming his own band and becoming a multi-platinum recording artist. Also, previous "Idol" finalist Jennifer Hudson was cast in the movie version of the Broadway musical "Dreamgirls" and went on to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

This year's "American Idol" winner -- determined by the votes of the show's viewing audience -- will officially be declared Wednesday night.
