Relax By The Beach Or Hit The Links In Hilton Head This Summer
Transplanted from cold, blustery Upstate New York, I have lived in Charlotte for nearly 10 years and have taken advantage of numerous weekend trips including the Outer Banks, the mountains, Charleston and Atlanta.Of all of my travels, I have to say the most impressive spot is the gorgeous, relaxing and fun Hilton Head Island.I have fast learned that a long weekend works better than just two days for this four hour trip from the Queen City so set aside at least three days. You definitely won't soon forget this luxurious resort spot that features 12 miles of beaches and an abundance of attractions. The island is located on the southernmost tip of South Carolina, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The town of Bluffton sits just 12 miles away and is the gateway to the island. Bluffton is growing in popularity with an amazing population growth of 175% since 2000. I think of Bluffton as an extension of Hilton Head with moss-shaded trees overlooking streets that are lined with great restaurants, historic churches and unique shops -- including a Tanger Outlet Mall.
The Sea Pines Resort is the most popular destination on Hilton Head Island and is responsible for putting Hilton Head on the map. Sea Pines is home to the Harbour Town Golf Links, where the PGA Tour stops in the spring and the world famous, 90-foot, red and white striped tower, Harbour Town Lighthouse. The lighthouse is a must-see for first time visitors, with an amazing view of the island from the top, but if you decide to make the climb during the summer months then be prepared to wait in long lines. Also in Sea Pines is the South Beach Marina where you can either embark on a dolphin cruise, where the dolphins are just as interested with you as you are them. You are sure to see many dolphins on the two hour trek and as a bonus you will learn more about the history of the island and the surrounding area. Another great little adventure that I experienced is a guided deep sea fishing tour several miles from the island out to sea. You will pull in your share of sea bass and if you're lucky maybe even spot sharks swimming by.After a long exciting day out at sea, what's left better to do than eat? Hilton Head features hundreds of restaurants to choose from with some famous ones leading the way. The legendary, Salty Dog Cafe also in the South Beach Marina, is a must try even if it's only for the T-shirt with the famous dog with the yellow hat. I have found the food at the Salty Dog to be very similar to your neighborhood bar fare, but the huge patio that overlooks the ocean is well worth the experience. My personal favorite eatery on the island is Wild Wing Cafe. "What?" you say, we can all go to Wild Wing Café right here in Charlotte. Yeah but this location is the original WWC location and knowing that little tid-bit makes the wings taste a lot better. My honorable mention for eateries on the island is the swanky, Italian hot spot, Frankie Bones. Enjoy the classic 60's atmosphere while you chow down on some big city Italian fare.
Golf lovers take notice: Hilton Head is known for its remarkable golf courses and also is home to the very popular PGA Tour stop, The Heritage, which is played in Harbour Town Golf Links ever year in April. You won't soon forget the breathtaking and signature 18th hole on the course which players are forced to hit their second shot over Calibogue Sound and take aim at the red and white lighthouse, which is just beyond the green. It's nearly impossible to top the Harbour Town course so I am not going to try, but I will mention a couple other courses that make the grade. In Bluffton there are two PGA Tour courses in Colleton River Plantation, the Jack Nicklaus "signature" course and Pete Dye "links" course. This gold haven is recognized in Golf Digest Index as America's 50 Greatest Golf Retreats.Okay enough messing around; I know what you all are waiting for, when the sun goes down where are the spots to be? You can start with the only public bar on the beach and one that has LIVE bands every night during the summer and plenty of beach volleyball during the day, the very popular Tiki Hut.If you're looking to down a humungous "Turbo Large" 190 grain flavored daiquiris then you need to check out Frosty Frog's , which once appeared in Charlotte. These refreshing concoctions come in many different flavors, including "Pond Water" which has a little bit of everything in it. A warning is even posted on their website about these drinks that says, "Grain may make you do stupid things." Just keep in mind you want to remember this vacation so pace yourself.
The "Triangle", as it's known to the natives, is a popular collection of bars located next to Sea Pines Resort with something for everyone. The Lodge, which has great martinis and microbrews, One Hot Mama's and The Brew Pub make up the "Triangle."So the next time you are thinking about getting away for the weekend, give Hilton Head a try and let me know what you think.
