Once Matt Jones was fully recovered from his viral infection, he would be Florida’s primary option at running back.
That was a popular theory, but it might not be the case.
Jones claimed this week he was completely back, but the Gators leaned on Mack Brown in their 31-17 victory over Tennessee today.
Here’s how the carries and yardage broke down among running backs:
It appears Brown has established himself as viable and he might even be the coaching staff’s top choice at this point. UF coach Will Muschamp said Brown’s large load of carries was merely a product of wanting to “play the hot hand.”
Another factor was Jones’ lost fumble after catching a pass from QB Tyler Murphy in the second quarter. It was his second fumble in two games. Brown has no fumbles in three games.
“I was disappointed Matt coughed the ball up,” Muschamp said. “He was trying to change hands and he got hit. We’ve drilled that in practice.”
