The Gators suffered a huge blow when starting QB Jeff Driskel broke the fibula in his right leg during today’s 31-17 win over Tennessee, but this is not exactly a lost year for him.
Because the injury happened so early in the season, Driskel meets the qualifications for a medical red-shirt. He still must apply for a waiver and get it approved by the SEC, but he meets the three main requirements:
1. Played in no more than four games this year.
2. Did not play beyond the sixth game (LSU on Oct. 12, in Florida’s case).
3. Has a provable injury.
Driskel is a true junior, meaning he has not burned a red-shirt year. He could play in 2014 as a red-shirt junior and 2015 as a red-shirt senior if his application is approved, which is a near certainty.
