Michiah Quick is out of Fresno, California and attends Central East High School the same school former (and briefly) Irish player Tee Shepard transfered from after his junior season. In 2012 Quick was teammates with L.J. Moore and Hatari Byrd, both whom signed with Oklahoma in February, to form one incredible high school secondary.
With a 247 Composite rating of .982 Quick is the 4th best athlete in the country. He's an excellent two-way player in high school and could probably be a top-flight corner in college but he prefers receiver at the next level and is being recruited as such by Notre Dame.
Quick visited Notre Dame in early April and called the trip 'incredible' and will likely be taking an official visit to South Bend for the USC game. Quietly the Notre Dame recruiting experts have liked Notre Dame's chances of pulling the shifty athlete out of California.
What's to Like:
Quick doesn't have great size (6 foot, 170 pounds) and he has a frame that is very similar to current Irish wideout T.J. Jones, although Michiah has a little more muscle as a rising senior in high school. Obviously the speed and quickness is there but you have to love Quick's toughness and instincts on defense. There's always a chance that Quick could move to corner if he picks Notre Dame and he might push for playing time as a freshman because he's that good of an athlete.
As good as Quick could be on defense his ceiling is probably higher on offense and I think Notre Dame is correctly targeting him there. Depending on how the rest of the recruiting shakes out he's probably getting a first shot as an outside receiver (again in the T.J. Jones mold) but still offers a ton of flexibility. If Isaiah McKenzie doesn't join this class Quick could be your slot receiver and a dynamite playmaker there as well.
Some do like Quick better on defense but I think he's too good of an open-field runner to not put him at receiver. He's one of those rare athletes that isn't very tall but has nice long strides where he can really switch it into high gear in the open field.
Schools in the Hunt with Notre Dame:
Early in Quick's recruitment he liked Notre Dame but Oklahoma and Alabama were also in very good position. The connection with the Sooners was obvious but that seems to have cooled lately. Recently, Quick has mentioned that he likes the trio of California schools listed above and Notre Dame as well. I would imagine those California schools are going to be in it until the end and any other school (perhaps Washington?) might make a run over the next few months.
