Centuries from now, assuming that the technology lasts and can still be understood, e-mail is going to provide profound insights into our culture and our various moments.
We get a sense of that from this article about e-mails sent to and from UNC A.D. Bubba Cunningham around the time Maryland bolted for the Big Ten. Some pretty interesting stuff here, including this one from a soldier in Afghanistan: “I will always love Carolina, but my fervor towards our athletic programs would die a rapid death should we choose to enter the BIG TEN.”
“I am so tired of hearing ‘UNC-Cheat’ and other derogatory comments from our ‘loyal’ (ACC) partners. … I would find this ‘holier than thou’ attitude a little less likely in the SEC.”
“Many old school fans want to stay with Duke but Duke isn’t D1 football material.”
Great stuff. Right now, Duke looks like a better football bet than UNC. As far as UNC-Cheat goes? If joining the Situational Ethics Conference is the way to cure that, wow, well go right ahead.
