Man Converts Car to Run On Vegetable Oil

A local man is giving the term "greased lightning" a whole new meaning. He has converted a car to run on veggie power which is cleaner burning that regular fuel.

Phil McGuffee travels in his 1978 Mercedes. He saves on gas money and pollutes less in his unique car.

“I call it the "greasel," he said.

The greasel, because it can run on diesel or old vegetable oil he collects from local restaurants.

“More and more cars are on the road. It’s nice to have some that are not causing any damage to the environment,” he said.

He bought a kit and worked in his garage in York South Carolina to make the conversion.

“Where the spare tire used to be, there is now a 2nd tank for the vegetable oil,” he said.

When the car is warmed up he just switches from the diesel tank to the bio-diesel tank.

“I get 25 miles per gallon so this tank will take me about 300 miles,” he said.

It cost him $1,600 for the conversion. He figures he will have to drive about 9,000 miles on grease before he starts actually saving money. But for him, it's about more than cash.

“It's not nearly as polluting as diesel, and it smells good,” he said.
